Windows 10 Professional is more expensive than the Hone and Student version. Could you make a saving there?

Cheaper the better in my experience, they drop them, get them wet, lend them to people and forget who.

And they leave them on the bus or in the pub along with their wallet, dental retainer and Halls of Residence Proximity Key.

Chalk and slate.

He's on FB a lot, this is his shop: https://uksl-ltd.com/

I've had a few laptops off him over the years and I think a refurbed high end business laptop with an SSD installed is usually a lot better long-term bet than a new but cheap retail laptop.

Difficult to compare laptops. A bit like tyres - you can't try two sets at once. But the physical bits of a Lenovo (screen and touchpad) are usually better made than those of an Acer or Dell, and 8gb RAM should be more than enough even for Windows 10. And, according to the ad, it has a vomit-proof keyboard, always useful for a student.

I'd say it depends on what tools they need to use - if it's just for writing essays and other bits, that's perfectly fine - if it's going to be required to use processor and RAM-hungry programs for image/video editing or 3D modelling software, then it'd struggle.

It's near enough the same spec as mine, which also has an SSD and 32 GB of Expresscache memore (whatever that does), but mine wont play nice with Revit, or some of the more demanding Photoshop tools.

Definitely recommend the Lenovo laptop, we have one.

Better than any of the HP, Dell, Toshiba crap we’ve had, so far.

Thinkpads are great, I have an old T420 that's still running strong that gets kicked about all over the place and I take when I don't want to take my high end Yoga 900. As someone said above, it depends what it will be used for. A fourth gen i5 paired with 8gigs of RAM is plenty for general stuff. And if you need a little more oomph you can up the RAM easily in a T440.

Those ThinkPads are brilliant. We get some people bringing in T42's we sold 10 years ago..still working for data transfers onto New T440's etc.

I can sort you out a ThinkPad with 12 Month warranty if you want. We still sell them in the shop but Online were mainly Apple based now.

Cheers,
Matt!

No one is interested in spending money on fixing Windows laptops anymore.
We can make 3-4 times more fixing or refurbing an Apple computer so our time is spent doing that now. I'm no way a fan boi but we found Apple customers appreciate the device and are happy to pay money to keep them going. People think of windows laptops as disposable now.
I always offered free diagnosis but we ended up just having our time wasted by people getting free diagnosis of their windows laptop with no intention of getting it fixed as they were going to buy a £200 brand new Lenovo anyway .
Its very hard talking people into buying a refurbished Windows laptop as there is so many companies not doing it correctly, giving the industry a bad reputation.
We still sell them though in the shop and I have lots of X1 Carbons for sale at the moment.

Thanks for the reply.

I've always been opposed to 'throw away' stuff, built-in obsolescence etc.. and now it seems pollution from all the stuff we chuck away is becoming more of a generally recognised problem.

I'm still running a 2011 MacBook pro, the Mrs has one of the same vintage, still going strong

Me too! Alot of the stuff I've saved over the years was heading to be scrapped. It's a great feeling restoring something back to it's original state. Probably why I love Alfas too .

The 2011 13" is the best MacBook Pro ever made. Strong, reliable, easily upgradeable to 16GB with big SSD and cheap to fix!

Never seen owt like those before. "Fanless" doesn't bode well for longevity of the processor, but then if they were terrible would they make & sell them?

Given Windows 10's propensity to progress at the speed of a leper in a swamp, it's worth checking out whether the processor is powerful enough. i7 is now in its 8th generation; these boxes are offering "4th/5th" whatever that means. Might not matter, but it's possibly worth Googling for some info.

it's a fecking swamp of how the eff do you know what's the right thing to go for?

More RAM, i3, i5, i7 - oh hang on that i5 is low spec mobile phone fodder

That's before you get to the differentiation of versions between vendors.

It's bull****

It all depends on what kind of applications you use and what kind of specs you need.

Then an i5 is more then enough, chipset wit a graphics card in it is enough to.
4gig memory should be enough but i would go for 6.
And an SSD of course, 128 would be ok to.

HP 2 in 1 are very handy, then you have a touch screen and can use it as a tablet to.
Dont know what you want to spend, adviced one recent for a mate for kind of the same thing you want to use it for and he is very happy about it, cost €550,-

Edit.

It isnt heavy, charges fast.
Got all the modern ports but no UTP port but these days Wifi is good enough.
It has a A/C wifi card.
