Bazza - Oculus update please

So what's the conclusion? Worth it or not?

I have the Gear VR where you strap a Samsung phone in the front. The rendering is done by the phone but I guess the movement tracking is all Oculus tech. The tracking is impressive for such a cheap device but, although the phone screen is high resolution, once it's been partitioned for each eye it is very pixelated. Also as because of the need for strong lenses it gives the image periphery a prism effect. I imagine the Rift is so much better and I'd be interested in your experience so far.

I'm very pleased with it. If you're looking for it, there's a noticeable 'screen door' effect. But once you're playing or watching anything, the immersion is so good that you don't even spot it.

Beat Saber is awesome fun - and quite a workout too.

Project Cars 2 and DIRT Rally are excellent. What I haven't got around to doing yet is playing them both with my steering wheel setup too for ultimate immersion. Actually PC2 is probably the only game I've played where the relatively low resolution (given how close to your eyes the screen is) is noticeable sometimes. If you're looking down a long straight to another car, or looking for a sighting board for your braking point, it's noticeable that the stuff in the distance is not pin sharp.

Elite: Dangerous - I've hardly spent any time at all playing it, so all I've really managed to do so far is fly out of a spacestation. But even that was jaw dropping.

Google Earth - with streetview in major cities, is a surprisingly amazing experience too.

I have suffered a little with motion sickness on some of the faster moving experiences. Unexpectedly, Google Earth was one of those when I zoomed out to suddenly be looking down on the curvature of the Earth. It can play with your sense a bit!

If you've got the kit to run it, I'd give it a strong recommendation. It's unlike any other computer experience.

Did you have to beef up your graphics card for it?

I was already pretty beefy with a 1080 Ti. I've had no problems with it at all using that card.

No. There's no VR version of Metal Gear Solid so far.
