MacBook factory reset.

I want to do a factory reset on my 2011 MacBook Pro, I've done a full back up on an external drive. Talking to other MacBook owners they say it is a risky thing to do a reset on a machine this age. It could lock the machine up as older MacBooks (over 4 or 5 years) really struggle with the Mojave iOS. Anyone with experience got an answer? What is the alternative as I can't afford a new one and wouldn't go back to a Windows PC if you paid me! I've already had the hard drive updated to solid state and increased the RAM capacity.
