Help with windows laptop...

My old laptop with my copy of MES on it, is playing up. When turned on, it just shows the windows screen (eventually), but nothing works. No amount of clicking, typing or pressing the Ctrl, alt, delete does Nada.

Any ideas of how I can boot it up in a safe mode or something. Just need to get to my copy of MES...

Thanks for the responses. Windows 10. I have now pressed F8 lots of times straight after turn on, and it seemed to go into a self diagnostics mode....it is now reloading windows all by itself...I'll come back in a few hours and see what's what!

That didn't take long.....

Clean version of Windows 10 now loaded. Boots up like a new'un! But all installed programmes have been wiped :-(. Looks like I'll need to buy a new version of MES.

Thanks for your help!

Curioser and curioser. The repeated pressing of F8 is no longer the recommended way to get into Safe Mode on Windows 10; instead you switch off, wait, and switch back on several times in succession, using the physical power switch. i.e. you repeatedly perform an "unsafe" shut down, and it enters Safe Mode. That shouldn't result in a reload of Windows.

Don't know what MES is, but if you have an existing licence for it, is there not the option to download a replacement copy to reinstall? That's certainly the case with Microsoft Office (for example).

I think that is what happened Sterzo. I had to turn it on and off many times to try and get it to do something. Maybe I inadvertently pressed something to make it reload Windows, but it did it...

MES = Multi ECU Scanner for Italian Cars. Vital bit of kit for all Alfa Owners! Yes there is a licence key, but I bought this copy about 6 years ago, and have no idea where it is....

I have now purchased a new updated copy anyway and installed it.

10 does have some good recovery.

Make a bootable recovery USB for future recovery. That may give you more options in recovery mode.
