Recording a tape

Mrs Bazza has a cassette tape of music by some friends of her dads. It used to get played in their car, and reminds her a lot of him.

How can I most easily get this either on to a CD, or preferably recorded as a set of music files playable through iTunes etc?

There's only this one tape, so I don't really want to go to the extent of buying lots of equipment.

If you have or have access to any kind of apparatus that can play the tape and has a speaker or headphone output that you could rig up a cable from to any kind of input (like a microphone input) on a computer, you could record it using any kind of free sound editing software. To get it into separate "tracks" you'd need to do a bit of cutting of the two sound files you'd get from the two sides of the tape then.

Ah yes, good thinking. It does have a phones output. I assume there'd probably lose a little quality in the transfer.

Do you think using somewhere like this:
Cassette-to-CD transfer and repair | We copy your cassette tapes to CD | Cassette to CD transfer service

Would be worthwhile to maximise the sound quality possible?

Bazza, Have you got a tape player/Walkman?

I still have a fully working iRiver MP3 player that can record to MP3 from a 3.5mm jack input
and is small enough to loan through the post.

There will inevitably be loss of quality - how much depends on the equipment.

You could have a go yourself, have a listen and decide whether it sounds good enough or not.

Thanks Nev, that's very kind. I do have a tape deck with a 3.5mm headphone jack.

Giorget's idea of trying myself first is a good one. But if I send it off immediately then I might get it back in time to be a birthday present.

That said, if I'm sending it off, would be good to get it copied to another tape first to keep it a surprise...

Let me cogitate, I may take you up on the kind offer Nev.

Just dug it out and plugged it in.

AA battery powered. Shows up as a USB drive.

It has a massive 512Mbytes of memory!

Max stereo bitrate is 96K at 44.1kHz

I forgot how clever it is. It asks the source (my current phone) to up the volume
via the line in and it can detect tracks automatically. Although I doubt a tape deck
will allow that.

Just ripping an album off the phone to see what it sounds like after all these years...

Bit wasteful to buy one as a single use gadget, but there are a raft of
MP3 encoding walkman style tape players out there around £15 a pop.

e.g.

https://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B01IAEIC20/

They even do ones that encode directly to SD without the need for PC/software:

e.g.

Cheers Nev. I think I'm going to go with a professional place to give the best chances of a good sounding result. It's still not much money, and it's for a present.

Garage
Alternatively track down those friends and see if they have a CD.
Other than that, recording it using the 3.5mm jack as output seems like the only way.
