Free antivirus

Deciding which one to use for the new computer. Techradar recommends Bitdefender over and above the usual standbys of Avast or AVG these days. Anyone use it and can comment?

How about Kaspersky? (Comrade.)

I have not had anything other than MS built-in stuff for the past 10 years
and haven't had a single issue.

I'm not sure I'd want Mother Russia rifling through my PC and/or bank account.

I have always stuck with Avast Antivirus. And then if I feel I need a firewall I get Zonealarm free firewall but I never usually feel the need for that as well as Avast

I also use Malwarebytes as a stand alone malware and virus removal tool. It's a seriously thorough bit of kit and is known to find and remove even the toughest virus'

Not true. There may be less malware floating around for Linux but it does exist. Reminds me of when Mac users used to think there was no such thing a malware on a Mac.

I will temper my statement with much less need for AntiVirus for Linux....we have ClamAV built into the Ubuntu software....might give it a wee whirl anyway

How do you think I afford all this? It's by getting free antivirus (and also never leaving the house).

For the last year or two, you can now also get free home AV from Sophos for up to 10 PCs. Sophos are in the Gartner Magic Quadrant, which basically means that large companies will look at them if they are reviewing their AV solution as they tend to use companies like Gartner to shortlist products instead of doing it themselves.

In the past they mainly dealt with the business market with an option for companies to distribute AV to employees.

However, as most IT suppliers want you to do at the moment, the settings and information are uploaded and viewed from the cloud. If you arenít comfortable with having data in the cloud, this isnít for you.
