Help - advice needed Games consoles

With Christmas around the corner, we have decided to treat the children to a games console. Kids are aged 10, 9 and 6 and to date have only ever played minecraft on an old PC.

I have ZERO knowledge about such things, so need some help from the AO tech community!

So what console do we get?
In terms of games, would like to get 3 games - driving one, flying one and something else for a 10 year old girl, who likes animals...

Look forward to your suggestions!

Thank you!

Er.....no don't think so. Our TV (all 28" of it) came from Tescos about 10 years ago..... I would be willing to upgrade it if necessary...in fact this console would go down in the kids playroom so I would buy a new TV for it.

Honest advice, wait until next year as Sony and Microsoft will be releasing new consoles that will be around for 4-5 years. They'll play games at 4k, so maybe get them a 4k telly this year and a console next.

Don't think 4K is an issue to be honest... and don't want to wait a year.

Having done some extensive research in the last 10 minutes I'm thinking an XBox One.

Just make sure your TV has a HDMI slot...any HD TV will do....4k will be good but normal HD at the moment is still great quality..... would recommend Xbox One as it has kept our kids (18yo and 12yo) happy for hours and give us "caring" parents a bit of piece and quiet

Ok Xbox One it is. What games do people recommend? Driving one especially? Forza?

Best Xbox One Video Games - Metacritic

Go by the MetaCritic Score....not the user score (too many fanboys rigging the scores)

Forza Horizon (29.99 @Game) got 91%....though my sons aren't into driving games.

Xbox One Console @Tesco Direct 199

you do not need a 4k tv to play games on.

what's your budget and what do you want your kids to play? (shooty games, activity games, puzzles games, etc)?

Just get a PS1 or PS2 and a load of old games from Ebay, they had loads of great kiddie games and at that age they wont really notice the shonky graphics - then when theyre older and like gaming you can upgrade to a newer consol

I did this with my sons r/c car last year (2nd hand off ebay). Then has to buy a new motor and body to make it look presentable. No qualms with buying 2nd hand for kids!

But having looked at the games, I'm quite intrigued myself with the graphics of the latest consoles/games. Things have moved on a bit since I last played Manic Miner on a Commodore 64!

Console graphics still ain't a patch on a good pc though. (although it's pot luck buying new pc releases without a myriad of bugs that still need ironing out....take Dishonoured 2 for example)

The Xbox 1 gift was very well received. It all went well for the first hour with setting up. More passwords and emails for a Microsoft live account...Not sure what that's for.

Then wi-fi wouldn't reach into the playroom, so another hour messing about with a spare range extender.

At this point I had a sense of humour failure and proceedings were halted for a while whilst I recovered.

So finally, after a brief skirmish between the 3 kids, over which game to play first, we loaded up Starwars The Force Awakens. After 3 hours it finally fully installed. Think this may be down to our slow wi-fi over the extender.

The game is actually very good, graphics great and the kids were having lots of fun on the multiplayer setting.

Next up was Zoo Tycoon, which installed very quickly and my daughter played for a couple of hours and loves it. Her first zoo is now making money, but her giraffe just died after she forgot to feed it...

Looking forward to Forza Horizon 3, hopefully tomorrow....

Games do take a bit to install....we have our Xbox hard wired...none of this wireless business...but i have just been told by my son that it took 5 (five) hours to install the latest Call Of Duty and we have a decent 70mb download speed !!!!!...i bought a 30 ft ethernet cable that does the job up into the attic bedroom where the xbox lives.
I just let the kids get on with it...it keeps me sane
