Moaning Would you believe it if I told you...

...that Spidey is for sale?

I can hardly believe it myself, but I've been conned into buying a Giulietta! We need to drastically cut our costs and, at the moment, our weekly fuel bill is 120-150. We need for me to have a family car, capable of towing the caravan so that Mr SG can get a little van.

I'm looking for around 2000 for him and I've up an ad in the classified section.

Spidey is one of the most reliable cars I've ever owned and I'll be gutted to see him go.

Nope, I'm gong for a 2.0 JTDM - probably the 170 bhp, although the 140bhp would do. Test drove two today. I haven't bought anything yet. We're away to look at one tomorrow though

Lusso or Veloce.

If economy is the objective then go for the 140bhp Lusso with the skinny(ish) tyres. Only 30 a year road tax as well.

It's a case of finding one. I'm not buying new. At 100 tax on the 170 I'm still saving over 100 a year on what it costs to tax the Spider. The biggest problem is that we live out of town. Our fuel costs are massive. There isn't a lot of difference in economy between the 140 and the 170, but the 170 will have a bit more torque for towing

Hhmm, but surely a secondhand Giulietta is going to cost 10,000 plus and there's depreciation to factor in too...wouldn't it be cheaper just to keep Spidey?

Not when you factor in Mr PG's vehicle too. At the moment we tax and fuel my Spider and a 4x4 double cap pick up. A Giulietta and a little van will be a massive saving. Plus, at the moment, we have to go out as a family in Mr PG's work motor, which is always manly. It'll be nice to have a clean car!

We have a 4 berth caravan. It needs to be something with a towing capacity of 1200kg.

No, after almost overheating in rolling traffic the battery went flat and with no jump leads got it jumped using my battery.

I can't afford a V6, not then and not now

Mine is the 170 Veloce Diesel - and while I love it, I do think that if I were choosing again I would likely go for the 1.6 JTDm. The difference isn't massive and it's mega-thrifty. However if you want a spin in the 170 give me a shout if you are in Glasgow.

Have you been in touch with Dinomito?? I was looking originally at the Profondo BLue 170 in his branch that I see is still there at a well-interesting price . . . . . . I bought an Etna Brown from elsewhere but only 'cos the mileage on it was next to nothing which suited me a bit better

I've tested the 140 and the 170 and there's not much difference. The 1.6 would be on the limit towing the caravan, so that's out.

Yes, I went to Graham first. I'm really wanting a white and he doesn't have anything in at the mo, but he's keeping an eye out.

Out local dealer, Lloyds, have only Veloces in, although there was a 1.6 Turismo in which was going for pennies - it sold minutes before we got there! But, having seen the trim difference, I'd prefer a Lusso at least.

I'm off to see another one today - a white 170 Lusso in my price range! I'll keep you informed!

On paper the difference isn't great, but the reality is quite different. Graham steered me in the right direction when I got mine, he assured me the 140bhp version was the one model in the range that could come close to it's claimed performance. He wasn't wrong either, it has dropped of in the colder weather to an overall average in the high forties, previously low fifties. It will easily get over 60mpg on long runs without trying to hard, best I have seen is 65mpg. I'm not shy about using the loud pedal either. The 16 inch wheels are probably worth a few mpg as well, cars handle fine on smaller wheels/taller tyres - as fitted to your Spider?

Having a quick read between the 2 models. It appears they have the same torque of 350Nm. But, the 140 torque peaks earlier. With this in thought the 170 is still the logical choice to tow a caravan that was as much as another car at 1200kgs.
