My clutch is shuddering on pull off. I am planning the replacement in September, however, I cannot pay R9k for a full clutch replacement including labor, after I did the same exercise last year on the GQV for close to R16k:censored:

I have been in contact with a guy that upgrades clutches to button types on Gumtree, he can also refurbish the clutch unit to standard spec...but he'll need the actual clutch.

Which is better, to get the complete unit or refurbish the existing unit?

Advice on the matter.:smash:

Also, warranty (with clearly specified conditions) on the "refurbishment" would be a plus if it's a cheap process. Then, if you spend R2k on refurbishment and it fails after 8 months or whatever, you can take it back and get a full replacement done anyway.

you've still got to split the motor and box either way.

so its cost difference between a clutch kit and the refurb price, weighed against the quality of the refurb and the fact that the full kit includes a new pressure plate and thrust bearing.

and then a week later the pressure plate goes... do it all in one

Just fit a new clutch and save yourself a lot of hassles .
Reconditioned units do not always work properly and if you want the judder to stop you have to replace more than just the clutch unit.
Experience proved that

Lance this is an old trick that some older guys will know: if you slip the clutch (don't overheat it. Just 3 or 4 high rev pull-aways) then you get rid of surface imperfections and it temporarily restores the clutch to operate a bit smoother. Don't do with a work clutch or with a damaged clutch though.

Heavier and shorter travel yes. I'll replace it next month with an imported unit from Alfa Workshop...R3500 imported base don R19/pound last month...

Its still cheaper than a R5500 dealer quote.:censored:

Lance if they do not insist on changing the gearbox front seal while replacing the clutch go somewhere else.
Since the seal is part of the thrust bearing slide.
If you do not replace them you have a good chance that the clutch will not operate smoothly

i had a button before.

speak to the guy and see if he can make it more organic, most can nowadays and it wont be that bad.

importing an aftermarket clutch is ALWAYS nicer. check with Spook123/Lee

Guili, i got my clutch kit for 3500 including VAT from dealers last year. Phone around.

As for importing, the weight of the clutch with drastically increase shipping costs. When i had a look last year at importing a clutch it worked out as the same price as the dealers plus i only had to wait a day to get it.
