166 3.2 help!!

I've noticed a noise coming from the bottom of the passenger side footwell. It's a low pitched whirring noise but can be heard easily above the engine noise. When I start off it gets louder and then drops back when I take my foot off the accelerator. The cabin and dash lights seem to flicker in tune to it. Yesterday then when I accelerated fairly hard out of a roundabout the engine management light started flashing and when I start it now it is very lumpy and jittery at low revs. The car is on about 99,000 miles. I was about to change to a GTA clutch solid flywheel and quaffe diff, so I'm hoping it my be related to the old clutch or dual mass flywheel and not something more serious. Would anyone have any thoughts on what it might be?

The air intake is on that side , wouldn't be amazed if the sound was coming from the engine. Have you checked for any splits or air leaks in the intake or the throttle body gasket?

That would cause a whirring/whistling noise and a lumpy loss of power to boot.

God I hope not. I recently changed all the gaskets throttle body/intake pipes/runners when I was doing the timing belt. I did it myself, had all the rights tools, and spend a good couple of hours making sure I was at TDC and all that. Hope I didn't mess something up.

Just for an update I drove it there and it seems fine, except for EML still lit up but not flashing. From reading around the forum it's probably MAF or Lamba sensors. Have scanner ordered so ill see what that throws up.

That's the best course to take now , see what it reads first to see if it'll point you in the right direction.

It's a minefield as you know, I've a 2.5 V6 driving me nuts at the minute, hesitates in low revs , engine hunting and eratic idle. The thing about Alfa ECU is they aren't great at actually telling you what's wrong they only indicate but the problem could lie elsewhere.

Example, I thought it was the MAF so I replaced the sensor (Twice) after it gave me fault codes.

P0172 , 73 , 75 , 76 - Fuel/Air mixture fault

Unplugged the MAF and it ran fine, fitted a new sensor this morning and cleared codes. Started engine , rough running was back , tried unplugging it again this time it made no differance. Plugged in the scanner.

P0300
P0301
P0303
P0305

Multiple cylinder misfires , have already replaced the spark plugs , checked leads , coils , changed induction system, breathers...

At this point I've booked it into TI Autos to find the fault I could be all year replacing parts! and I've a pain in my backside with it now...

That sounds like a nightmare Irish, I feel your pain. At least your going to the right place for some answers. Let me know how you get on.

I took it for another spin this evening and the problem was back again until it warmed up then it went away, so I'm going to leave it alone until I scan it. I'll post the results as soon as I get the machine .

I know , booked into TI for the 11th as Gerry is out the door at the minute. Probably the only mechanic I'd wait 2 weeks for , but at least you can be sure he'll find and fix the fault faster than any other mechanic! I actually wouldn't let another mechanic touch a Busso..

I was hoping to to go in there shortly with a boot full of upgrades but I'm in two minds now as to whether it's worth it or not. Car is in great shape in general. Paintwork is immaculate, inside leather is as good as new. I basically took most of the engine apart when I was doing the timing belt to clean the bits and replace all the gaskets.

There was only one owner before me and he looked after it so it's a good candidate for upgrades, light FW, GTA clutch, Quaffe, koni FSD, ebachs. None of the suspension bits were ever done but it's still very tight, so a couple of new bits up front and powerflex the rear, along with the other bits would make it sweet.

I had a gtv v6 before it and to be honest I prefer the 166. I was also toying with the idea to go to England and pick up a v6 gtv and stick the 3.2 engine into it but that would be a horrible thing to do I think, since they are so rare in both England and ireland. Now once I get to the bottom of whats going on I'll be Happy. What sort of millage is up on yours do you mind me asking?

Mines on 117k miles now , she's in very good nick except for this misfire.

Had the afternoon of and couldn't help myself to go out and look at it again , I did a vacuum test on all the pipes and connections , found a breather pipe loose but it didn't fix the issue but I know now the problem is not an air leak for sure. I re-tightend everything on the intake manifold as well.

I'm now convinced the fault is with the coils or leads, one of them under the Plenum chamber is arcing and ticking/clicking constantly sounds like coil 5 or 6 but it is definately not right , it would explain why I'm getting the cylinder misfire codes now but not why I am getting so many of them unless that one coil is knowing the block out of sync.

If I get a few hours the weekend I'll take it apart again and swap the rear coils to the front and see if the problem follows, if so I'll know to replace the coil. Might have a quick look when it's dark to see if any electric current shows arcing under the plenum but it could be hard to see under there.

Indeed, I've had the plenum out so many times I'm setting a record for speed out and in lol

Took it out to pick up my son earlier and the hesitation in low revs is gone loose breather must have been causing that, we're getting there now!

I'd definitely be keeping your 166, the 3.2 is extremely rare particularly in Ireland overall the 166 is such a great car all round...the gtv is lovely as well but a facelift 3.2 166...you'd be mental any pictures of her?

..pollars4 your 166 sounds awesome so I hope it works out for you. A 3.2 166 is such a rare and special thing it's really worth preserving..

@ irishcrx sounds like a royal pain, but it sounds like you're getting close. Sometimes experience and instinct with these engines trumps all logic, so hopefully it'll be easier the next time

Don Baker in Enfeld is the chap I let work on my cars. He does fantastic work and is also an Alfa specialist.

I hear what your saying about taking it apart, I'm fairly fast now myself, it's a cracking feeling doing a job on that engine and getting it right, really gives a good feeling, and the more you save on labour the more you have for parts Happy days your getting there.


As an update the EM light, hesitation and noise are gone in mine, so I took the maf out today for a clean, I'm just about to stick it back in.

Ya she's a keeper alright, I'll take a few next time the weather is good and stick them up.

Thanks man , yeah I know about Don but he's a bit far out from me having to leave the car, get home , go back out etc. Gerry is only ten minutes from my job.

I might have it solved myself by the 11th hopefully , I drove it Galway this morning and didn't notice any problems through the revs ,no loss of power and engine management light remained off. So only issue now is bad idle and that clicking under the plenum which hopefully I'll confirm as a faulty coil or lead the weekend and if not then I'll wait for Gerry.

remove the ecu off the rear of the plenium & clean up the earthing points under the ecu onto the plenium

Thanks for putting me on to that the earthing wire was completely loose, I gave it a clean but didn't solve it unfortunately.

Hooked it up to a diagnostics tool today and got the following results.

P0206: Injector circuit open cylinder 6

P0306: Cylinder misfire detected

Might be a simple problem as I know the pita clip that holds the plug securely to the injector is missing on that cylinder so hopefully it's that simple. It can't be making a secure contact if that clip is missing.

That's 10 years since Pomeo's belt snapped on me...TDC fun wie a big screwdriver doon no.1 cylinder...Isn't ignorance bliss....YUP need the gauges but screwdriver was a guid bamber starter fur 10. So really well dun Polaris in getting beasted in yersell. Dof Cap to ewe.

Thanks Pomeo..I used the screwdriver method which is perfect for getting it there and abouts. Those gauges can be very jumpy. Screwdriver first gauge later.

NCT's are a pain in the hoop. Money racket over here. Over 10 years old no matter how tight the car is you only get to drive for a year before you NCT again. Mines on the 20th of this month. Should be fun.

I posted first in the 166/164 section and you put me on to finding out about engine codes, so I'm in there somewhere .
