166 - My Project Story

Well, where to start;

I got my fist 166 in May this year. Beautiful 166 caught my eye after selling my Mondeo ST200 Without thinking to much I decided to buy it. Was a bit surprised how it handles when I first drove 166, a bit to soft for me. Any way I honestly thought it is a good car and will serve me for next year or two. I was so wrong! After 3 weeks of driving, on some nice sunny day I decided to change the oil. It went fine till another 5 days later on the road for some shopping my oil light flashed me into to my eyes when cornering. Stopped the car completely and ran for the oil to the nearest garage. It actually took me about 3 trips to a garage and 3l of oil !!! since then I only had problems. Car started drinking oil like crazy! 1l every 300 miles! That was a lot. It was not the end of my problems as I decided to take the car for suspension checking, shocks, springs, bushings...disaster - shocks 20% all bushings gone! front and back , completely wrecked! When I was buying a car it had the NCT done 3 days before so I was pretty sure its going to be all right. Unfortunately the car was a complete wreck not worth a penny. I needed it for my trip to Europe so packed about 20l of oil into the boot and off we go 5000km later and 20l of oil less I got back to Ireland with no hassle...well back tail lights stopped working! It was to much for me! I decided to either fix it or scrap it ! I was just looking for an engine, even decided to take one at some stage but then...I found another 166 with 78000 miles, dirty as hell inside! with some minor faults and not so good suspension. Apart from that the car was 1/3 price what I have paid for my previous one with half a milage and better mechanical condition. Again without thinking to much I bought the car. Next day I already knew that swapping the engine to mine and fixing a suspension would only cause more problems. So decided to put this new blueish 166 back on the road and scrap my silver 166. The only problem was to collect all the parts needed for the whole operation. It took me a while but the car is drivable already. The project is not finally over. There are sill few bits and pieces to be done but nothing major. Here is the list to what was done till now and what has to be done whit next few weeks. Ill try to make it short.

Silver one is gone but I took whatever I needed for spares. All work has been done by myself. It took me a while but I think it was worth it.

Top class Fifthgear!!!
Small thing but my old 166 I had the silver mesh on the grille-looks class.
That stripping out the interior is a lot of work.
Been there done that!!!

Some update on this

Zender Kit is on as you can see on the picture. I'm having problem with my rear brake calipers so this would need to be done quickly. I have changed rocker cover gasket as the previous one has been leaking badly. Still there is a load of work to be done. I've taken of almost all the badges from the back. Also ordered new AR badges, front back and center caps for alloys. They will be black with silver background and Editzione Speciale instead of "Alfa Romeo".

Next or maybe this weekend ill be changing aux belt and next month I'm hoping to change timing belt, including water pump. I need a new set of tyres as well but before that I have someone to make me a adjustable STRUD BRACE :P for the front similar to the one on the picture.

Here is a picture on a brembo calipers I was also working on a Carputer project but I'm afraid no to over invest the car. I have a PC already, just need a screen and thats it, but this is suspended at the moment. Im working quite slow on this as I have some health problems. Fortunately in have a surgery booked next month finally.

Since I have some Heat Resistant red paint left Ill make some under the bonnet painting:P today maybe tomorrow. I have ordered the mesh grille for the front as well, same as the Mufasa had ( look up )

If anyone needs dome parts Ill be making order next month and I can get you almost any parts 50% cheaper than Motor Factors. There is also a possibility to order LED tail lights for 166 quite cheap, here is how it could look. Its not finished yet but will be available shortly, price around 130e including shipping to IE. If you like them I can make a preorder.

Yes mr FG great looking 166 . I know about putting video on the ICS I bought 2 units to put Video and music through the ics (even bought a new Ipod !) , I have them still here , I just got lazy , now there not needed as My young fella is only interested in Music at the "purist" level ..

And good luck with your health problems

Aux belt changed it was a 15min job ! wow didn't expect it to be so easy in Alfa

Dermo

Have you got the video interface to connect camera, ipod etc. to ICS ? I might take if of you, as this would solve my problem with buying new screen.
