It's a strange on alright. The opening says that it is on hiatus, which sounds to me like that are doing a revamp of the site, but they'd usually give some sort of indication of the length of the hiatus. Then the sign off sounds very final.

Was there any sort of notice given or did it just disappear?

octane is in hiatus

the octane forum is taking a well deserved rest after thirteen whole years on the air

if you want to catch up with the octane refugee movement you'll find them on both the pistonheads and fortyacresofyellow forums

thank you kindly for all the support

there's no drama

we did what we set out to do

Seems to be pretty permanent. Damn shame too.

The fortyacresofyellow site seems to have caught a good few members so hopefully it'll all work out.

Have to get my refurb thread back

theres a post on one of the links thats mentioned in the hiatus message...

As I said on PH:

There is no big drama about the end of Octane.ie

eob has reached the point where the hassles of being legally and technically responsible for Octane have outweighed the benefits of the site. He no longer posts much and his prime engagement for a couple of years now has been dealing with threats and anger from various people.

There have been some things recently but there was no dramatic event that lead to today - there was a meeting of the head moderators a week ago where options were discussed and ultimately eob has decided to shutter the forum for the time being.

Eob has put so much time, money and, tbh, love into the forum over the past few years that nobody can begrudge him when he finally decides that he can no longer deal with the stress.

Running a site nowadays, legally, seems like a full time job. Look at all the problems with Twitter. Gone are the days of complete free speach on the internet, now it's the era of bullying and defamation
