159 JTDm

new 159 owner

hi everyone!

after having lusted over an alfa 159 for a few years, and after having trouble with a tdi passat in the past few months, i'm just after picking up a 09 1.9 JTDm 159.

delighted with it, despite being discouraged from buying it by others! the same others who would have recommended a passat of course

so, what have i let myself in for?? (apart from an enjoyable drive?!)

so far i do know that i'll have to do a timing belt change in the next few k, and will do so asap.

not a petrol head by any stretch of the imagination, just an admirer of the car

Hi & Welcome to AO

You've found probably the biggest & best source of Alfa related info online in the Tech Lounges so if you've got any questions I'm sure someone on here will have the answers.

Congrats on the 159, I'm sure you'll love it, well wear

I have saved three choice words for a person such as yourself:

You, Jammy, Git.

I'd love a car like that, enjoy it!

thanks for all the well wishes!

second day in the car today and i have to say that i'm loving it, like i said i have little car experience but it feels like nothing i've ever driven!

there is however one thing that's making me paranoid...

when going fairly slow, say in third or fourth, and i depress the accelerator a little (say a light touch) to push on a little bit there's a slight hesitancy in the car (not a judder, more a slight "jump").

this never happens if i put my foot down further, even a small bit further. is there a lesson in this?? should i just floor it all the time?!

the wife says it's my bad driving....she could be right....coming from driving 80bhp golfs etc i may be just getting used to a more powerful car!

Sounds like it could be just the lag before the turbo kicks in. If you're new to a Turbo Diesel, you've probably never experienced it before

Hey OP, welcome and enjoy... can I use your original post the next time I'm meeting my friends in a pub scenario?

The story will go something like this.....

Quote:
I know of this guy, who had a VW Passat TDi... he was plagued with problems. he got sick of it and got himself a reliable sexy car... What car did he get? Yeah, he bought himself an Alfa Romeo 159 1.9 JTDm and never looked back.

I hope you enjoy your car, and remember there is loads of techy help if you need it

So a quick question, when you park your car and walk away, how many times do you look back?

Ha!

Thanks lads, I especially like that passat angle!

As regards the comment about the turbo, would that happen around 1.5k rpm, when not accelerating very much? Sound about right?

Like I said, it never happens when my foot goes down!

All In all feeling fairly jammy alright, it's the kind of thing that deserves staring at in the driveway!

Handier than you think actually, the 1.8 MPI engine in the 159's is from a Vectra!

I've never driven one so I couldn't be sure. But I know on my Bro's Audi A4, the turbo doesn't kick in till about 1.5k alright.

As the lads say, could just be the valve clogged a bit. Check that first before worrying about the Turbo

If you're used to a non-turbo engine it does take getting used to the two-step power band so to speak. The key is to keep the turbo in all the time by keeping the revs up a bit.
No granny driving!!!!

Keep the window down and listen for that turbo whistle....

I'm sure someone in the tech lounges will tell you exactly when it kicks in revs wise.
