Narrowed the car choice down

After spending many weeks and months choosing the next car to give our Alfa a break I have narrowed it down to the following candidates:

1) BMW 330d (2000 BMW 330D NCT 7/12 IRISH CAR for sale in Kerry : €1,800 - DoneDeal.ie)
2) BMW 530d (BMW 530D SE '00 for sale in Dublin : €999 - DoneDeal.ie)
3) BMW 330d (bmw 330d nct 03/13 for sale in Cork : €1,999 - DoneDeal.ie)
4) Alfa Romeo 156 (01 Alfa Romeo 156 jtd) This one you should know
5) Mazda 6 (03 2.0 tdi mazda 6 for sale in Cork : €1,395 - DoneDeal.ie)
6) Volvo S40 (Volvo s40 1.9 diesel 2003 for sale in Dublin : €1,499 - DoneDeal.ie) Missus really likes it
7) Toyota Avensis (TOYOTA AVENSIS for sale in Mayo : €2,500 - DoneDeal.ie) whereas I prefer this one

Anyone have experience with these motors? I never really heard anything about the Mazda so it could be a good car. hope I posted this in the relevant area

The Mazdas are good, my money would be on one of the 3.0d BMWs or that 2.4 JTD though. Forget the Volvo and Toyota.

Ive driven a diesel 6 before and it had good poke in her, effortless overtaking power for a 136bhp unit. I am tempted more by the 330d (silver one) but I'm very afraid of the timing belt change cost as the engine has to be rolled out? The Toyota would be the number one for me mostly because I had the mark one version. Why would you cross both the Volvo and Toyota out?

530D is the one for me, after driving my buddies ones flat to the mat last night they are the nearest thing to an Alfa

That Alfa has me tempted though aswell.... hmm cause at least with the Alfa I know what to expect. What power is in the 530/330? 180bhp right?

BMW's 3 litre diesel has a timing chain, they don't suffer from problems either.

Volvo & Toyota wouldn't really be engaging to drive so would be off the list for me.

There are 2 versions of the 3 litre diesel, 2926cc and 2990cc. The earlier one is 184bhp and has a 5-speed manual, the later one is 204bhp and has a 6 speed manual.

I imagine the 204 one is the newer version, the FL one say 2002 onwards?

The later model one is grand also. The earlier model is the one I have driven and it's been mapped to 230bhp and around 350lb/ft of torque if my memory serves me well. They are a nice car in SE spec or even M tec spec, the SE is nice if you get the right leather etc.

My mate has a 184 model which made 229bhp and about 340lbft on the rolling road, it goes very very well. It was faster than my mapped 2.4 JTD 10v but only just a bit slower than my 3.0 156.

Yeh, its a great engine and if you get someone that is a good mapper you have a nice power band also.

Pud did you source that from a GTV or 166?
Just curious/nosey!

It came from a 166 but both work the same. If you take it from a 166 you need to change over the top steady mounting bracket which means removing both rear bank cam pulleys. If you get it from a GTV it can go straight in, but you'd mad not to put a belt on it anyway so I'd say it makes no difference.

Which 330d are you thinking about? Im split between 4 cars tbh, the BMW 330 (the green one) and 530d (the blue-ish one) the Alfa (this i would need to here from the lad in Donegal cause I remember it had turbo and clutch issues which have been sorted apparently) and Im thinking of the either the Mazda or Avensis

Sorry Kev only copped there were two now - I'd look at both of them.
The 530 looks like a throwaway to me - the 330s look like they could be keepers or seller oners.
Sorry I just decided to invent some new words there...

Are the Volvo engines the same? The thing that puts me off that Volvo is the loss of power thing, could be anything from a bad MAF/EGR to the turbo overboosting.
Looking at the green 330d I'm in two minds about it, one is the colour - I just dont like it and second is the interior and I notice that there is no cd player. The cons are I always like the 3 series, the nice 330d engine and those wheels look nice.
The 01 330 however is fairly nice, black leather with silver body, nice wheels but I'm not liking the poxy spoiler.
I personally think the Mazda has a nicer interior than the Beemers. Opinions?

+1 if I hadnt had bought the Alfa I would have gone for that, they are a very nice place to be.
The most common problem on the 3 series from what I've read is either the clutch shattering or the heater blower breaking. Ok not huge problems but still clutch jobs arent cheap so I would need to be on the lookout of a harsh life.
On the Mazda however there seems to be a problem with the fuel tank due to it being too close to the exhaust and also clutch and air con problems.
Something is nudging me towards that Avensis though, its a cat c so I think I can talk him down in price and it has a pretty hige spec.

Unless you are a sales rep you will hate the Avensis. It's hideous.
