Returning to Alfa ownership, at last!

I've bought a 03 156 1.9 JTD project car which I'll be picking up Saturday. I'll be swapping some parts over from my 2.4 and hopefully getting a kit from Mariusz at AutoDS. Also planning a slightly different paint job to finish it off. I'll stick up some pics of the starting point when I have it home.

Yep, been driving a 1.3 multijet Punto since the demise of my 156. Can't wait to get back behind the wheel of an Alfa!

Would that be my old one by any chance? Sad to hear its gone. I scrapped my 2001 2.4 JTD Sportwagon this week due to insane amounts of rot.

Mine is almost as bad as that on both sides, front to back! Even the 03 I just bought has signs of it starting so that will be one of the first jobs to tackle.

It was once.. It was fine 6 months ago when I had it on the ramp, crusty underseal in places but not perforated anywhere. I parked it up in the yard at work a while ago as I was driving my other one, only to pull it out last week and get it on the ramp (for aux belt, tensioners & underseal ) and after a bit of prodding and poking I was left with that. I was half tempted to cut a good floor out of a breaker and weld it in, but on further inspection it wasn't just the floor, the diesel lines were seriously rusty, all the brake lines were rotten, the chassis rails in the engine bay and the inner arches all had serious amounts of surface corrosion. It had done about 190k so it has done well, most of it will live on and keep other 156s on the road so its not all bad.

It had obviously been leaking water into the car while it was stood, I think thats why that particular footwell was so bad. The rest of the floor wasn't totally gone, just peppered with small, easily fixable holes.

Such a shame its finally had it, I really did love that 156. My first one & the 3 litre I replaced it with are my most favourite cars I've ever owned, even the GTA & M3 don't really stand up to them. What do you think to the 1.9 8v engine in comparison? BTW how many miles did you get my old 156 up to? I think you bought it from me on 120-something thousand..

Good to see you back in the saddle Mark. A project thread would be great if you have the time or are bothered?

It was a brilliant car, I absolutely loved it. Never had a moment of trouble with it. Engine in the one I just bought is in bits! I'm taking it and the interior out and rust treating everything, then wax oiling it. The engine is at 168k I think.

Are you putting the 2.4 engine in the one you've just bought then? It'll be nice with the facelift interior.

Thats the plan. It should be straight forward, shouldn't it?? The original body with the facelift interior is the perfect combo in my eyes.

I totally agree, and the 10v engine is the one to have. I'm not sure how straight forward it will be, the facelift interior car used a different ECU & codebox, but I'm sure its possible.
