Temperture

Is it possible to have a slow acting thermostat? My wife has been giving out about the fuel economy of our 166 lately, I know fuel prices have gone up and all that. Going by the car computer on a trip to Kerry a few weeks ago I averaged 33mpg, one and a half hours drive each way cross country, not great roads. She took it to Mondello on Sunday (80%) Motorway and averaged 37mpg (she had it over 40mpg if she stayed at 65mph) so I think those results seem fine. The problem is with shorter runs, I used it to drop the kids to school the other morning, drove the two and a half miles into town, spent about three minutes in traffic, dropped them off and drove the two and half miles back, I would think about 15mins in total. Had a look at the temperature gauge and it was at 70deg, 90 would be normal. Does anyone think the temperature should be up to normal by that stage? obviously the fuel economy is in the low twenties on these runs.

Sounds like it should be up to 90 by then. Mine ( 1.6 TS ) is up to 90 I'd say in less than about 3 miles or 6/8 minutes most of which would be in a 50kph zone.

Mine usually takes less than 10 minutes to get to 90.

Does it get up to 90 on long drives?

My Thermostat was stuck open and unless the engine was fully warmed and in traffic, it never went above 75. It meant it was running rich then and getting poor MPG for short journeys around town

I changed mine and it takes about 10 mins to get up to 90 (MPG & MPH )

your thermo needs to be replaced I think, I had the same problem with the 155, normal op temp should be about 85 although if your thermo is faulty usually it will never get to 90, its not a big job to remove at all, you will just loose a lot of fluid so you might aswell replace it while your at it.

Mine will hit 90 in traffic etc, sounds like it generally would be slower than some of yours to get up there, but on long journeys 75-80. Is mine knackered too George?

I thought mine was knackered ages back, always hovered around 80, bought new one after reading so much about them on this site. New one is exactly the same. Mpg is fine though(before and after), just got paranoid. It does heat up >90 if in traffic but fan kicks in and drops it back to 80 ish. Temp gauges can be incredibly inaccurate so wouldnt be too worried...

The temp in the Spider when I got it, never reached 90 at all, even in traffic. New stat and it goes up after about two miles to 90, never moves after that.
