Want a nice cheap GPS unit

Lads I am off to France with my 156 in four weeks, whats a good GPS unit? I know nothing about them other than using the neverlost system in a rental in Texas a few years back.

What should I buy? How much should I pay? Can you rent one? I mean I will only use it for the hols really...

Please give me some advice.

much cheaper to buy AFAIK.
Halfords were doing them recently quite cheap...
I know it sounds obvious, but make sure you get one with the western europe maps. Many just comes with ROI and UK.

I personally prefer the Garmin stuff.. Halfords do the Nuvi 1240 for EUR105
I had a Nuvi 250 for ages - great yoke and could be expanded with SD cards. Which I did with US Maps.. only just recently sold it on...
Now have a Nuvi 1370 that I got in the US for $200 which has all north america and europe in it..

Don't get one with Bluetooth - is useless.
Check out update prices. Many of the garmins or tomtoms are a little bit pricier but come with lifetime updates. This is worth a lot..

What kind of phone have you got. Most newer (last 2 years) nokias have GPS receivers in them and free satellite navigation (which is really good) software available. All legit.

..or for an android phone with a decent sized screen copilot is pretty good for about €20. (actually probably a bit dearer with full EU maps)

i suppose tho in fairness a dedicated satnav like a garmin with up to date maps is hard to beat..

Thanks lads, sorry I didnt write back sooner. I ended up buying a GPS - Garmin 1490T - 5" screen and full euro maps. I do own an android phone but really didnt look into it. Ah well...

To tell the truth we will be bringing two cars to France next week, my wifes Honda people carrier (which will more than likely have sat nav fitted) and my 156 that will follow and use my phone I suppose. But the beauty is me and the missus might get off in the Alfa for a mini road trip and leave the kids, honda and her parents (coming too, its ok we get on grand) with them.

Adventures with Sat-Nav and Alfa in France await!
