My First Alfa

Hey all

In the process of looking at a new car for myself. Have been driving company cars for the past few years, but last year changed jobs and lost the car. Since then we've been making do with the 1 car, a fiesta.

Have saved up a few euro and now have a budget in and around 2k to 2.5k.

I've wanted an alfa since i can remember. I've read the horror stories, but I've also read all the good things. Really I want something that is a bit of craic to drive, is a bit practical for the future (babyseats etc) and looks good.

2 questions for you all if you don't mind?

1) Will I be able to pick something up thats decent for that sort of budget. I am aware that I'm looking at something older. Am cool with that. I just would like something pretty ok that I won't have to spend lots on straight away. Over the medium term though, I'm happy enough with having to show the car a bit of TLC.

2) Can anyone recommend one the the pre-purchase services that would know about Alfas. I have a few mechanic friends, but by their own admission Alfas wouldn't be their strongest when it would come to a pre-check.

Any help or advice you could throw my way would be greatly appreciated lads/lasses.

Thanks

Baz

You'd get a very nice 156 for the top end of that budget. But bring someone along with you that knows Alfa's as you can be stung by them. As they are getting into the cheap range of cars just to drive till they break and people are ruining them.

thanks damien.

Regarding what I could get for the money, I'm hoping I ca pick up a nice one alright, and would be happy to hold off til I see the right care.

DO you know if any of the pre-purchase car check companies would have any better insight into buying an alfa?

edit : why does my thread title have stars in it?

I have an auto spell checker thing on my browser. I noticed it changed alfa alright but I thought I told it not to!

Could a kindly mod change it for me? First post and I already look like a tool.........

You could get an absoloutely mint 155 for under budget, a decent 75, infact there are quite a few you could choose from. Scouring ebay can be a good way to find deals.

Welcome along man. Your in the right place for starters. Very decent bunch of lads on here. if you are looking at Alfas you should maybe get the owner to bring it to Gerry in TI Autos to get checked over if you are thinking of buying it.

check out done deal bud, Its takes a while as there is alot of kak around but decent ones do come up eventually.
I found one just yesterday, but I had these two in my sights, magic words are 'timing belts done' if they're not done budget for it as a quick read of the threads will tell you, the ts engine loves to throw them off

the sportwagon is really cheap, but the red one looks very clean indeed worth a look imo.

+ 1

I see your in Dublin so getting it into Ti Autos shouldnt be a problem They are based in Cowper street not far from Stoneybatter. You will hear a lot about Ti thats because they are without doubt the best people you can bring any Alfa to for anything. Also they know of good cars going for sale so might be able to help you out there. Do you have a particular model in mind? The money you have could get you anything from a well specced 166 right down to a mint 146 which are one of the most practical and cheapest to run Alfas. If you see something you like let us know as a lot of us will be willing to look it over with you so your not going in blind. More than likely you will end up with a twin spark engine, if so there is two things to insist on, regular oil changes and timing belt done, if not prepare to budget anywgere between 4 and 6 hundred for the belts to be done, so that being the case whatever you buy dont pay the asking price, always bargain down.

Might as well get the tool bit out of the way early, happens to the best of us....!

Welcome along, nice to have another Dublin member to try to balance out all those cark boys..

You could have a look at this: alfa for sale in Dublin: €2,800 - DoneDeal.ie

Looks lovely....if I was buying it would be on my shortlist - don't how you feel about the tax though.

+1 about Gerry in Ti, ask him if he knows anyone selling the model you are interested in - easiest way of getting yourself a decent one.

'76 Spider -> '93 164 -> '99 146 Junior -> '97 GTV -> '99 Spider....

Cheers for all the advice lads, and also the offers from a few of you to come look over any potential buys. Thats very cool of ya.

Am off to Barcelona next week, so car hunting will obviously be taking a back seat to that

When I get back though, it'll be back on track.

Firstly, if anyone is looking for a fairly cheap city break, then go to Barcelona. Great place. Very cool and lots to see and do, plus plenty of shopping that kept the wife happy.

Scouring the car sites now for my new motor. Quite a few alfas around it seems, will be hoping to go and see a few over the next few weeks, having read pages of this place, which is an amazing resource, fair play. Doubt I'll have anything by your next meetup, but maybe by the one after........

Damo, go easy, he might not have eaten for 10 minutes and his blood sugar might have dropped dangerously low...

And BTW you wonder why you don't have a GF with charming patter like the above?

Like OMG...
