I think it's the liability issue. The website can be held legally responsible I am led to believe, but it's not my field of expertise. Nice 166 BTW, horseshoes look much better than the Supersports to me.

Dermo, my day job is selling advertising for a website which has a very active forum.
My understanding of the legalities is that if a website has a forum with moderator(s) then that website is liable for any (potentially) slanderous content.
So that being the case if slander was proven this forum could be in trouble...
The problem is what might be said online as part of a semi-private conversation could be picked up in google searches and potentially damage the reputation of someone's business and livelihood....
Not giving my own opinion in any of the above so to speak....

Monza , we only started a thread about the exact circs of what happened , nothing libalous (wrong spelling) and the condition of the car when returned to ireland which was the truth ? The car is unroadworthy and was bought as a direct result of the report (third party or not !) , they came on then and made a threatening remark stating that they had informed the local constabulary ... what a reeeeeeeeeeeeeeetard ,

Sorry Monza , but until they replied we were having a nice LOCAL rant , Its like big brother .... I don't usually vent my anger but it seems the thread did make them sit up and decide to contact my IRISH friend

slander = words falsely spoken that damage the reputation of another

I did not slander anyone I merely quoted their site, and they made the thread "heavy" by a threat "As for the post threatening to burn down our garage we have past a copy to the local authoraties who will be speaking to the alfa.com site owners as to what action to take. "

This is the wording which annoyed me

Dermo, I've deliberately held back from engaging in some of the chat re Bat's motor because of this type of issue.... Still staying out of it although I know your frustration comes out of not wanting to see some poor young fella getting stung wherever the blame lies...

On a less serious note, I also do editing for a print magazine we produce and the spelling general on here can be pretty rough.... But which of me thinks that? Or wrote it?
I'm off to have a scrap with myself.....

Was it that car advertised on gumtree that had been clocked?

That's a shame. A relative of mine lost a deposit on a car that was clocked. Had been wound back from at least 137K to 90K. It was showing 137K three years ago.

I wonder how Pistonheads get around it? I've seen a couple of threads there warning people about cars in their classifieds that aren't what they seem.

Not sure To be honest , all I know is what is on the site and I've seen the condition of the car (not on here !) and besides the rust issue there are some other potential probs that even my laymans knowledge could have disgnosed , but thems the breaks , its just a shame as the guy is a young fella and spent a very long time researching the V6, you wouldnt mind but he sold a minter of a 156 to purchase the v6

I'm trying to weigh up an online community sharing knowledge about known issues with a certain car with the costs involved in getting an independent inspection?

I know someone that says there was some discussuion on a forum he frequented about having a list of known bad uns, but was a dedicated forum for one specific limited production run car.

Your intentions are good. I went through 3 lemons as a kid. I went about 3 years without a car after that partially because I just got fed up with the hassle. A colleague drove past me in the opposite direction as I was driving off home in the last one. He wanted to check it over and make sure I didn't buy a lemon. Too late.

I dont know as there are threads on most "dedicated" sites with the info you are proposing . My better half has a Mini (2007) and there's a Mini owners site where I find out all the "known" issues . But a site costing the inspections would be handy, but when I bought mine in the UK AA inspected the car for me and listed the probs but I decided it was worth the price at the time .

We buy with our hearts Monza and its just a shame to see this happen to the young ones , they can sue the pants off me if they like , i have a company legal team which would love to take the case , at this stage in the climate it would be a bit of interesting work for them ..

I will die with an alfa and would like to see the Marque continue to be purchased by the young fellas , but this kinda thing can leave a bad taste . I remember my first brand new Alfa I bought (had a few before i could lay out the 35K for a new one !) and driving it away from the stealer the petrol gauge wasnt working but I still didnt get it fixed till the folowing week .. now who's the Lemon buyer

Sorry Dermo, I should have explained better, it's a failing of mine.

My friend was saying they were mooting having a list of cars by registration number saying what's known to be wrong with each individual car. The next time I'll see him I'll ask why they didn't run with it. Perhaps some of them realised that most of their cars weren't perfect and they'd not be doing themselves and the reputation of that car any favours.

Me too, but we'll get by. Not a bad idea at all , twould be nice to see the history of problems with a specific car which would help potential buyers . If this was the case then one would not need independant inspection .. now you might have a problem putting the AA/RAC or OTHER specialists out of business .
