Help Help Buying SH 156 - Alfa Ireland

Hia Guys,

As some of you know, I wrote my Alfa off a few weeks ago, well now finally getting insurance settled and am looking for a decent replacement.

With the insurance and what I can add, I am looking at between 2000 - 3500. [not much I know, but after heart probs/heamachromatosis and chronic arthritis slowed my work in the games industry down, its the best I can afford at the moment.

What I am looking for is a 156, 2002+ 1.8 - 2.0lt or diesel, [although they seem like hens teeth]

I have been looking on Done Deal, carsireland.ie, carsforsaleireland.ie so far. Is there anywhere else to look that would be worthwhile?

I have a very good mechanic I will be taking with me to go over the car and having owned a 156 for 6 years, I know what to look for. Obviusly looking for history etc. If I was in the UK, it would be easy, but being of Irish decent, finally back home, I am not so sure of where to look!

Any help would be so much appreciated. Once I get my butt back into an Alfa seat where it belongs, I would also like to start attending some meets and stuff. I am in the West, Co Mayo, but can travel pretty much anywhere to look at a decent car.

Cheers - Shaun

Hi Klap,

The UK would be an option, but what about the tax on bringing it into the country?

I brought my last one in free as I was living in the UK, what about now I live here, is not tax an issue?

Hi Shaun, see below the link to the Revenue's VRT Calculator, filling in the details for the Sportwagon it looks like you would have to pay 720 to re register it here.

03 Alfa Romeo 115bhp 1.9 JTD for sale in Kildare: €2,050 - DoneDeal.ie

there you go... just what you are looking for. no point spending so much on vrt is you arent paying much for the car... and the UK cars have a lot of rust issues.

Bat any news with the car? still not registered i guess? Ive been reading some forums about this rust thing on your car and there is a place in Galway (i know its far but the best quote wins ) and a place called Western Motors kept popping up and they have good reviews. Im not sure though if they only specialise in certain cars but you could check up on it.

About the spec I agree with you but more and more rust problems are showing up so im wondering if the extras are really worth the hassle later. All I wanted when i was looking for my JTD was AC - ended up getting leather seats, AC, all elecs etc for about 1k - again it was bought in the North.

Hi That would be really useful.

I have a great mechanic here and he has said he would go with me to look at any cars, but it would be great to have somone look at it!

I know Alfas and their faults and foibles, but am not good mechanically at all lol.

I will check into the car in more detail but its one of the better value ones i have found so far and get back to you mate!

Cheers - Shaun

Hia Prop,

Its a tad outside my budget. I paid 8.000 for my 156 back in the UK when I bought it, the insurance company initially wanted to give me 1460.

I have found several, its really a case of narrowing it down and checking them out. Did you see what I did to my last faithful baby?

Hia Guys,

Quick, ? If I buy a care from NI how long do you get before you need to get it sorted with the revenue?

Also seems that under the drop down menu for Alfa Romeo on the Rev site no models are listed, kid of figures, so would mean a visit or call to rev office!

Cheers - Shaun

Are you sure you are looking at this?
VRT.ie VRT in Ireland(Vehicle Registration Tax), VRT Calculator, CO2 emissions, Importing Cars to Ireland

You might have some sort of blocker that is stopping the dropdown from populating....
