Figuring out previous owners

Is there any way to figure out the original or first owner of a car ?

My 166 had one owner up to 2007 and then move behind dealers until it came to me...in all the moves the history has been lost....

(I can also give them back the 10k they left in the boot ;-) )

What do the 'yellow sheets' tell you? Can anyone request them and are do they have an official name?

They have the name and address of the owner on them, and are officially known as the "Vehicle Licencing Certificate". After 2004 this was replaced with a "Vehicle Registration Certificate".

Although I said you should be able to get the previous ones, I'm not sure anymore, as that would be a breach of the previous owners' privacy. However, if you're the owner of the vehicle, your certificate will have the number of previous owners on it.

..no, shannon won't tell you who owned the car, which is fair enough. they can tell you how many registered keepers it's had alright.. sometimes this sounds worse than it is because the car may have started it's life registered to a garage, or maybe a husband transferred it to his wife or whatever..

That also is printed on the car's log book There's a section there (J5 i think) which tells you how many owners it had before you.

The old TAX books were better as you could see who actually owned the car I dont know why they dont have the names of the previous owners on the new VLC . But if the car is what you want does it really matter how many previous owner a particular car had . You could have 10 owners and buy a great motor or one crappy previous owner and buy a lemon !
