Mobile alfa specialist in Dublin?

Hi Guys,

Does anyone know a decent Alfa mechanic in Dublin who could drop out to my house and diagnose what my engine (potential) issue might be? Car drives fine but is on UK plates and currently uninsured or taxed. I need to know if the car is worth VRT'ing/NCT/Taxing/Insuring or just taking back to the UK as a project for someone over there.

Basically I have a tapping on start up that lasts for no more than three minutes, I was concerned it might be belts related so I popped off the belt guard and had a closer listen, and maybe it's coming from in there but it actually seems to be coming from the back cylinder head. Just below the airbox/plenum chamber seems loudest.....

Car had a top end rebuild at 63K (aux belt tensioner failed), along with new belts. 78K on the car now 3 years later. The work was done by an Alfa specialist in Essex.

Are there common issues with tapping from the V6's in general? I've heard that twinnies can be a bit clattery at start up, but haven't of heard problems with the V6's?

Anyway, it would be great to put my mind at rest one way or the other, so if you know of anyone (whom I would obviously pay), who could come have a listen and take a reasonable guess, I would be most appreciative. I'm based in Killiney BTW.

'Fraid not. You could always give Gerry Campbell a call, but I've not known him to do house calls. Dave Nolan (theredx19) might be worth contacting? Also, try Octane.ie, good few Alfa lads on there that don't seem to post here.

Hope you get it sorted-an Alfa V6 is very much worth keeping on the road....

What kinda taping the old mans V6 is kinda tapping when ya start but it's nothing to worry about it's what they do. The man would be Theredx19 here he is the king when it comes to Alfa's.

yeh I know they used to be an Alfa dealership, and I think had a good rep. I'm not sure about the V6 but on the TS 1.8 and 2.0 litres you sometimes get a rattle on startup that makes it sound like a diesel. Is this your problem? Is it more like a diesel or rattling sound?

Thanks for the replies guys,

it's a tough sound to describe, not a diesel sound, more of a metallic tapping which starts constant and then gradually dies away after 3 mins - I might just video it when it stops raining and let you all have a listen.

I've used Pascal Kennedy for some of our other cars over the years and only had mediocre results from them. Can't help but feel that an Alfa specialist would just listen and go "ah yeah, that's xxxxx........"

Will dig out the camera and see if we can play a game of 'Guess the noise' later.

Cheers,

D.

tbh there is no mobile mechanic although if Dave "theredx19" is in Dublin he will drop over if he has the time (he lives near Roscrea but is from Dublin). No harm sending him a pm, alternatively get onto Octane and a few of the lads might be in your area and be able to help. I'd say if it goes away afte a few minutes it should be grand to drive over to Gerry in Ti or if you dont want to go that far drop it into Donohoes on the Kylemore road. It sounds to me like its not too serious and is worth getting fixed

Yeah, the car has been parked up for about 6 months (though it's started and driven around the yard every 2-3 days to prevent things seizing up and keep a charge in the battery). I do want to VRT it and start using it again as it has been faultless up til now. I think the sound had started prior to being parked up, but don't know if it's getting worse or just staying the same (paranoia perhaps). What I do need is a sanity check prior to spending money on the VRT+Tax+Insurance+NCT potential issues, etc, etc.

I'll PM theredx19 and see if he's in Dublin sometime soon
