gear seal perished

I have a problem!, i left my 147 in for a routine service yesterday and was told that the seal for 5th gaear had perished and was leaking oil, they said it would be 3 hours labour - seal €60, oil €60 and labour cost, total €385 is this correct or can i get it done cheaper (this was a main dealer by the way) i will probably drop down to TI autos to get it replaced as this price seems a bit high! also i need to replace the inner tigh rod which they said the steering rack needs to be replaced any ideas....

Did you try Donohoes on the Kylemore? They are about the only main dealer I would use, otherwise its Ti or theredx19
€60 is way too expensive for fluid, I went down to Tallaght Autoparts and got 2 litres of DOT4 for a lot cheaper than that.

Unless it was lost in translation, that does not make a lot of sense. A 147 gearbox has 3 seals. 1 for each driveshaft, and 1 for the clutch shaft. It wouldn't have a '5th gear seal', or indeed any seal for a gear.
Chances are its a driveshaft seal, as the clutch seal is part of the clutch bearing assembly. If it is the clutch seal, it means removing the gearbox to fix. Drive shaft seals are easier to fix. Gear oil is about 10.00 a litre, a typical 'box takes about 2 litres.
The inner rods of the steering rack are unfortunatly not supplied as a seperate part, so a new or s/hand rack is the option.
