Problem(s)

Right, just been to Advance PitStop to change my oil I've bought from Kevin, left it there for 40 minutes, and when I came back the guy told me he couldn't change the oil because the oil sump is f£cked, if he tried to move it he would break the sump, and that he thinks the car has never seen an oil change.

Now the question is what can I do without going in huge money ?

p.s: on the plus side while the car was on the ramp I looked underneath and no hint of rust. Just a small patch on the backbox, but the rest quite clean.

You could always try one of those garages where they have a system that sucks the oil out through the dipstick hole. Not great in my opinion but that and a filter change is better than nothing for now till you can get something sorted with the sump.

From the sound of it, looks expensive, might as well just try and find a sump and get it over with, don't ya think ?

Ideally yeah if you can afford it but you dont wanna run around to long if your oil is way past its best? Should be able to source a sump pan quite reasonably though i would think - plenty of used ones around if you cant stretch to a new part!

OK this can be done without braking the bank. As dabs said there is a device you can buy whereby you put the tube down all the way into the dipstick pipe. It sucks all the oil out into a little reservoir. You can get on ebay hand pump versions that are quite cheap actually, am thinking of investing myself. I know of a few lads who actually reckon cars should no longer come with a sump plug and use this method instead. I had my sump replaced by Donohoes late last year because when I undone the nut it threaded so I couldnt get it back in there. Cant remember the exact costs but my service history is kept in work, I can try find the recipt on tuesday and let yuo know.
here is an example

If you dont want to go down that route and you want a new sump try Summerhill spares off the malahide road who often have stuff like that but contact Gerry in ti first and ask him how much to replace the thing. Whichever is the allround cheaper option go with it.

Actually I have one of those sump pumps . Great bit of kitt and if your sump nut seized its a cheap way of getting the oil out. No messing with sump nuts etc and the oil is collected in the pump and can be poured into containers without a mess. If you are thinking of using one just make sure the car is warm before you pump it out . But it seem's you have it sorted already

Its not the price its the ease of use . You can have the oil changed in ten minutes tops wothout changing your clothes . We ( and Me !) always change our oil every six k miles
so regardless its worth every penny !

What does he mean by the sump being knackered?
Is it the sump plug? Has it threaded? If so, you could get it helicoiled rather than replacing the entire sump.

If that's not the problem, then I'd be a bit concerned about what exactly 'sump is knackered' means? Is it about to give and drop all your oil?

Hello bazza,

He said that the sump plug is blocked in there, and if he wants to get it out he will probably ruin the thread. Anyway she is parked for the rest of the week, and I'll probably sort it out in the weekend with David(theredx19)

Lads are very reluctant to helicoil nowadys as I discovered last year with my sump plug. I had to get a replacement sump.

Strange. Had my 145 QV sump helicoiled a few years back. Cost about £60 I think, never had another problem with it.

Word of warning on the cheap ebay pumps . . . . . .they aren't worth a F ! Go for the sealey one. They're doing a deal at 70 euro at the moment I think. At least that's what I paid for mine from a auto factors.

What he said.

Mark there are a few places left that will helicoil a sump it just depends on how bad the original sump is.
