Ambrose Glass gone

Ambrose Glass Motors in Kilternan - boards.ie

Not sure if this is just the sales operation.

Never used them myself, but one less Alfa specialist in the country maybe?

they were very good to me in the last 2 years, and everybody I talked to and used them were very happy too.
they didn't go under, Ambrose Glass decided to retire. I'm getting my car serviced one more time there in about 2 weeks, I might be their last customer - they only call in the mechanics if there is work to be done.

Introducing myself...

I just wanted to say hello to everyone! New to the forum and happy to share and discover others experiences in owning the great cars as Alfas are. At the same time I wanted to ask if anyone could give me a tip on the following. I intend to buy a 166 2.5 V6 which has suspiciously low mileage only 25k in almost 10 years, had two previous owners (who actually used the car but three selling dates show up so I think one of them could be the dealer ), the reason I'm writing in here is that according to the man I want to buy from it was serviced at Ambrose some time ago. Checked it on motornet.ie and from selling history it seems that last owner (user) sold it to Ambrose on 20/08/2009, then the man I'm buying from bought it from them (according to him) on 04/12/2009. Ambrose is now out of business and the dealer I was redirected to when called checked registration number and had no history! There's still a business card from Ambrose on the windscreen with next service date. There's no servicebook and I'm not sure if the seller has NCT certificate (the actual green page where mileage can be found). The car has a valid NCT till 05/2010 and is taxed till 07/2010. Called NCT but they do not provide any details of previous tests to anyone. So does anyone of you know someone from Ambrose who could help and provide some information on this car! I have to admit that the car is really in excellent condition inside and out but that mileage keeps me worried. Thank you in advance for any help and if you think I could help anyone of you somehow do not hesitate!

Can you get it verified with one of the companies provide history check? If it's 10 years old then you definately have to get the timing belt+rollers+tensioners replaced together with the waterpump (it's a 1k job at any dealer). Plus at this age the suspension might be soft and and the exhaust rusty. Other things to check would be the thermostat, MAF, and the codes (radio, satnav and alarm) for the ICS. Do you have any pics? I'd get the car to Gerry to get it checked, he'll tell you everything you have to know about it for ~60 euros.

Hi, I've checked it with Motorcheck.ie and it showed all other things but no previous mileage was found. The car is honestly in top condition, hardly any signs of wear and tear. It's on Donedeal.ie for sale in Laois. There's only one with mileage this low. I drove it on saturday, engine runs perfectly, no creaks or knocks from the suspension and I took it on a back road at 130 km/h. I have 156 myself and rather know what to look for, serviced with Gerry C. many times. One thing is that it pulls it to the left a bit too much but I suspect bad tracking. I'm going to see the seller tomorrow at 12, do the last check ups, I'll try to find out that mileage and probably finalise the deal. I've looked for a dealer garage near Portlaoise but no luck, tried to arrange with other dealers but was told that their computers will not show up if mileage was tampered with. I don't think it would be possible to go to Gerry before buying, he's got busy schedule as you may know. One more thing got to my head now. Do you know by chance what make and type of tyres they were fitting from new because I think the car could have still two original ones at the back. Thank you. Best regards.

I remember seeing this car for sale on carzone a few months ago. I owned a 166 at the time before trading up to a 159 so it caught my eye.
It definitely wasn't in

Sorry, hit wrong key by accident!!

I remember seeing this car for sale on carzone a few months ago. I owned a 166 at the time before trading up to a 159 so it caught my eye.
It definitely wasn't in Ambrose Glass. I have searched for the dealer but can't find him on carzone. From memory he was up around Balbriggan somewhere but the mileage was advertised as being the same.

Thanks a lot, this gives me another piece of information. When I asked the seller where he bought it he said from a dealer south dublin, he actually didn't say it was ambrose, said only that it was serviced there. It was rather my feeling he bought it there. He bought it in early december and says he wasn't driving it, he's got a 156 too in his backyard but I think he's trying to make a few quid(?) just reselling cars.

Got the car! It still smells new! Rear tyres are all cracked, seems to me they're the original ones! Happy to show if someone want's to see and perhaps share some experiences! I'm in Maynooth, Kildare! I'll probably make some pictures if it stops raining and post them here! I take Klapancjusz's point and will definitely book with Gerry to do the tracking and check timing belts if they didn't deteriorate like tyres over time. Hey Klap. do you think it would be necessary to replace rollers and tensioners too? I think they could be fine considering the mileage but with belts I agree 100%. Any tips on the tyres, brand etc.? I have Dunlops Sport 01 on my 156 and I'm happy with them but could try some else on 166. Thank you and you all have been very helpful, thanks a lot!

I'm in Maynooth too man-what colour and year are your Alfas-I will keep an eye out for you. I'm in the 'maroon' GT. You should come along to the meet in Naas on February 20/21.

For tyres, I am happy with my Toyos (bought on camskill.co.uk) and would have them over the Goodyears and Pirellis I had previously. Price isn't bad either.

I believe the rollers and tensioners are very cheap compared to cost of labour. While you're there, make sure you change the waterpump too, and get one with the metal impeller - if the waterpump fails, it's usually caused by the cracked plastic impeller, and you have to take the belt off again to replace it - better to get it done at once.
I have these tyres:
Falken ZIEX ZE-912 225/45 ZR17 94W XL TH, Rim flange protection
very good and not that expensive either

Thanks Klap. I know it's best to do it at once. I've done it on my 156 in july before I took it to Spain. It cost me 600€, got original parts in Poland (together with variator, pump, all) and Gerry did it for about 300€ and doing the same on V6 straight away...bit tight on cash but we'll see! I'll see what Gerry says!

CCovich
They're both '00 but 156 (black) will be taken off roads, I'll give her a break for a while, my wife will drive it later (she loves it).
166 is grey.
I'm off that weekend so will probably go (for the first time). Get me the details sometime next week and we'll meet there! Thanks!

I'll keep a look out too, the girlfriend lives there and we both went to college there, great spot! Lived in Beaufield Grove, Newtown Court and Old Greenfield when in college.

Congrats on the new motor, stick some pics up when you get a chance

Hi!

ccovich, dermo

Checked the link and it sounds great, it would be a nice feeling to cruise along. I'm down for few pints, probably won't stay for the night but could meet on Sunday too. However I'm not too sure about testing that 166 on a dyno (never done that though on any car) before I know what's deep in there (ref. Klap, timing etc.). It sounds great to know how engine is performing but I hesitate a bit. Anyway, I'm off for a week from friday so I'll have finally some time to dig in it, 'll sort the tyres for sure, maybe tracking too but won't have the engine checked. Got two Pirellis P 6000 on the front so I think I'll go for another two and have a full set. Been on camskill, thanks. I saw a long time ago some beautiful GT parked beside the church few times but I'm not sure if it was yours. Saw your pics, it's beautiful.

Greets to all the rest.

Thanks! I'll definitely buy Pirelli P 6000 cause I found a brand new one in the boot so need to buy only one new tyre. Those cracked Michelins are year 2003, damn, 7 years on the car!!! I'll post some pictures tomorrow!
