checking for faulty lamda sensor

Hi Lads,

Is there a way to check if the lamda sensor is faulty? I know a few months back it had to be replaced as my emissions were way over the NCT limit, also I noticed there was a smell of petrol fumes when I got out of the car.
Lately the same symptoms are happening i.e. petrol fumes getting out of the car and two friends I had in the car said they could smell petrol fumes in the cabin
I know lamda sensors are crap anyway and tend to have to be replaced regularly but how can I check if it is faulty? Is there something else that can cause them to go?

Regards

Genuine Lambdas are good for 10's of thousands of miles (can't remember the actual figure - similar to plugs IIRC)
A diag would give the lambda readout for comparison against a known good one

They can be checked with a multi meter and the smell of petrol could be the seal on the petrol cap but if you want to call down and have a coffee I can show you another spot where the fumes come in
