Hmmm Should I sell my Spider...??!!

OK lads, here’s the story....

I love my Spider, it’s in great condition, low mileage, not a thing wrong with it… but…

I’ve been offered a very tempting deal on a TVR Tuscan S, 2003 model, apparently in great condition – I know the guy selling it so I would trust his word that there is nothing wrong with it at present.

So the thing is, I would have to let go the Spider to get it – will I regret it? The Tuscan has always been a bit if a dream car but I know I have to discount my first impressions, I know it will blow my socks off when I drive it…

I don’t want to hear “it will fall apart, go on fire, eat your face and then explode…” stories... I know it's not an Alfa or even Italian, but it's some motor..... !!?? What do you think??

'76 Spider -> '93 164 -> '99 146 Junior -> '97 GTV -> '99 Spider....

Re: Should I sell my Spider...??!!

Tuscan is a fantastic looking car. Sounds even better.
And in today's market, affordable.

Cons:
I wouldn't buy one if I did not have a garage to house it in.
Can you sell the spider in this market?
Next weeks budget and road tax... (2nd car ownership will be hit hard)

Are parts easy come by what with a pimply russian now owning TVR...

Re: Should I sell my Spider...??!!

Hi Volmars,

All good cons, but the spider would be thrown in the pot as part of the deal, that's the only way I could get value for it in this market.

I am waiting on next weeks budget to see what happens, I suspect cars like this will get shafted big time....

I simply don't know if I could let go of the spider though..

If it was financially viable then I'd do it.

Re: Should I sell my Spider...??!!

Hard to call.
You asked not to mention it but reliability and TVR's.....
You would get to drive the Alfa a lot more.... me thinks. Plus it is easier to live with.

In my opinion owning a performace car is about driving it .. not watching it burn a hole in your pockets while it sits around... (from experience :-))
If you have a garage and you can afford it.... go for it (sorry alfa), but opportunities seldom come around twice.

If you said you were thinking of replacing it with a 2.0 TD Avenzzzzzis....... expect a horses head on you bed...

Things would have to get pretty desperate before I end up in horses head territory....!

The reliability thing is in my mind all right, but then if I was that worried about reliability I would not be driving an Alfa......!

Uh-oh! You're already talking like a non-Alfa owner I thought only we knew how reliable our cars were (mine certainly doesn't let me down). Best kept secret IMO. Whereas TVR ... My bosses boss had a Griffith that needed 3 fuel tanks. Kept leaking into the boot. Nice.

Re: Should I sell my Spider...??!!

Would you be keeping it to run it into the ground? How hard will the tuscan be to move on in a couple of years if you decide you want a change?

I love the look and sound of the tuscan though. If i could, I'd have one.

BUT, and its a big but, with the alfa's if it goes belly up, it goes to gerry (or in my case ignore it and put another engine in ). Where would you be bringing the TVR to get it sorted? good garages and free advise makes living with odd ball cars a little easier.

Think there is one guy up North that will do the servicing. Otherwise, it is a trip to Engerland.

No brainer...go for it!

Once the TVR bug bits its hard to get away from. Don't even try to compare the two cars as thet are totally different drives.

Re: Should I sell my Spider...??!!

A friend of mine actually had a 2003 Tuscan in a silver/gun metal colour, what colour is the one you are looking at? if its the same, I am guessing there aren't that many in Ireland so this may be the same one.
My friends one was getting fixed up north most weeks, up north is the only place where you can get it fixed, and you'll need a ready supply of batteries (he kept three spare!), also when it rained the wipers stop working. It was an absolute nightmare for him to own and he is a real petrolhead.
I would stay clear of this one I'm afraid. Are we talking of the same one, I think he traded his in to Sports and Classic?

I saw that one advertised too (I guess it's the same one), but there is something about the body shape of the tuscan that just does it for me.....

Thanks for that Gav, it's can't be the same one but your description would get me a bit worried.... then again, people always have horror stories about Alfas too.....

Re: Should I sell my Spider...??!!

if you do go for it please tell/ask you significant other to inform us when and where the funeral is taking place.

tuscan = nice car
tuscan on irish roads = hobbling a race horse

and if you dont have a garage it will be stolen by scumbags who will then be doing 100 mph going backwards after spinning out on a tiny patch of dampness on the road and slamming into an oncoming john a wood hino and exploding in an massive fire ball and featuring on the 6 o clock news lol

that whole thing about having to go up north for repairs should be a major turn off unless you got loads of cash the taxman dont know about..your choice either way ask you friend if you can have it for a weekend and drive the *** off it best of luck

Wow...

To be honest, I have had 3 days of glorious (not warm yet, but glorious) sunshine and it has reminded me why I fell in love with the spider to begin with..... I can't leave her....

I reckon the TVR would be fantastic on occasion, but too hard to live with all the time.... the spider is fantastic all the time...

sounds like you have made you mind up, good choice.

either way it was a win, win, win situation.
the extra win was for the mechanic up north who would be able to send a kid to college with the money youd have to spend to keep the tuscan running if you got it lol.

how much fuel did you burn in the 3 days you had it you lucky *******

Re: Should I sell my Spider...??!!

I'm glad you decided to keep her. After all the above, I think you've made the right decision.

The "I can't leave her" just shows what alfa means to you. (sounds a bit soppy but it's an Alfa, so understandable)
Maybe you would never have felt that with the Tuscan.

Happy Alfa Driving..
