Postal rates - couldn't they have just left it alone?

Some people out there may not realise it's gone all complicated.

If you send a luvverly card to a special person that is more than 24 cm long or 16.5 cm wide (high I assume) of 5 mm thick, then the standard rate ain't gonna do it. This is irrespective of weight and holds even if it's full of hydrogen and needs a lead stamp to keep it down on the mat.

If you do attept the standard postage rate, your loved one will get a note saying it will cost them a quid to get hold of it. And given that you bought it for 70p down the local market, you tightwad, it will hardly be worth it. So, your beloved will learn your true nature and your life will collapse around you, driving you to a steepening spiral of despair and hopelessness.

And all because the Royal Mail had to screw about with a simple and easy system.

I blame the private mail firms. RM has to try to compete.. but everyone also complains when 1st Class goes up 1p.

27p for next day delivery anywhere in the country is blinkin' marvellous, really.

Had one of these "you owe us 1.06" cards the other day. No idea what the item is so they can just take it back again. Might be an Xmas card or worse some circular.

Yes the system is crap; an aunt sent my son a card for his birthday with a badge on, it was fractionally too thick so we had to pay £1 penalty and the 6p extra postage. Even the guy at the sorting office said it was ********. Great scheme....for the post office, extra revenue through increased prices and extra revenue for penalising people for not understanding your stupid rules.

Re: Postal rates - couldn't they have just left it alone?

But if they stuck a blanket postal rate, say 30p, everyone would whinge about it.

PO (or whatever they're called these days) has a monopoly on the post boxes and infrastructure from GPO days... so they can't price mail delivery at the level they need to make a profit.

This is part of government initiative to allow private operators to also offer mail delivery services, though (no surprise) those firms have concentrated on London and SE while ignoring the Scottish outer Hebrides and other areas that PO is still obliged to service.

Ironically, these private firms pay PO to deliver their letters from local depot to the addressee's door.. PO actually make a profit on that part of their business.

The post office has to compete with the private companies who can pick and choose what they deliver and alter their pricing to match.

The post office has to delivery bills, small letters, junk mail etc, where there is tiny profit margin (or none at all) and has no say in whether they deliver it or not, they are forced to do it.

The system nowdays rewards the cherry picking private companies who are making a mint.
