Parents

OK, specifically the type of parent that begrudges anyone else having a life that does not revolve around breeding.

I have no desire to have kids, have a reasonably well paid job, and generally manage money well, which results in an amount of disposable income. If I had a quid for every time someone gives me the doleful look and asserts that they wish they could afford to do XYZ I'd probably have retired already, never mind having an amount of disposable income.

I didn't make you have kids, get over it

Aparently their kids will be paying for your retirement too.

As if you haven't paid any taxes what-so-ever all
your working life. Nor paid more tax due to their
tax deductables kids. (At least here in France they are.)

It's your taxes that fund their kids' education.

..and their kids that look after you when you're old. I think we're going around in circles

We need both but that's not Eddie's point?

I seem to recall somebody explaining the theory of taxation is that you pay for what you need at the beginning and end of your life in the middle of your life when you work. That, however, is by-the-by.

My wife and I chose to have children. In order to do that we made, and continue to make, sacrifices. In our view, those sacrifices are entirely worth it (for us). I would never suggest to someone who didn't have kids that they should crack on and get themselves some. Firstly because it's none of my damn business and secondly there's always the possibility that they may not be able to, which would make it incredibly insensitive. I don't really see telling other people how to live their lives as my job.

I have 3 kids and love being a father. Yes it is very hard work, very expensive, tiring but it is incredibly rewarding (emotionally). I would have more if my wife would agree!

Seeing my son's face as he stood on the podium at his recent gymnastics competition after working so hard at it, seeing my daughter win her medal at a tetrathlon on the umpteenth attempt, watching my youngest develop at school and learning to read. All priceless moments which make you so proud to be a dad. Really proud - so proud you want to tell everyone (even on a forum of people you don't really know!) It is a very special feeling, that I don't think any amount of free time / disposable income can replicate.

A lot of my friends don't have kids and have more free time to pursue hobbies, which I have long forgotten, have more disposable income to enjoy on themselves, have nights out on a whim. Do I complain - no way. Would I swap - not a chance.

But do I recommend to them that they should really be starting a family - no of course not. They see the fun we have as a family, they see the rewards we get as being parents, they also see me running around here, there and everywhere and hear the arguments! Everyone is free to make their own choices.

For me - I don't regret it one bit!
