Sun roofs

What happened to 'em

I used to like to get some rays on my (now balding) bonce - no connection, I'm sure - but these days they are like rocking horse turds. Search for a motor, 87,236 results. Refine search, petrol, 11,502 results. Refine search, NOT lady licence, 543 results. Refine search, with sunroof, 2 results. One in Auchtermuchty with 217,423 miles on it, one in N. Ireland that is in fact a Land Rover.

Since when did we all become cave dwellers?

Has sh1tty air-con killed the sunroof?

Didn't SAAB sell them as a moon roof?

Jesus I hate this country

No 2 on the Git list

Are you folding?

Go to a scrap yard and track down a Jag XJ or other oldish motor (maybe BMW) and remove the electric sunroof and motor etc, then you can spend the next six months working out how to fit it. Other than that, I think they went out with the MK 3 or 4 Cortina?

Excellent OTT rantage.

Also why are the ones you can find now all glass with a
flimsy cloth blind that is not up to the job?

Making you an ant under a magnifying glass...

Yep - those kinds are a bit of a joke down here in Africa. Try driving in a car with a "panoramic glass roof" with its thin cloth blind closed on a day when it's 35 to 40 degrees Centigrade in the shade...

Good Rantage

Last car I had with a sunroof was a 2003 Rover 25. It also had A/C.
A 1995 Honda Accord with A/C (that actually never worked) and sunroof which was a few cars before the Rover.

They do indeed seem to have bitten the dust today

I had ones on the 147 and 159.

It was the main reason I bought a new 147
instead of a 2nd hand 156 originally.

I have one on one of my classics - it is actually really nice to use when the sun's out (like yesterday) even though it's only about the size of a letterbox. I always steered clear of them in later years because it was just one more thing to go wrong when buying. I think the improved availability of both aircon and convertibles removed much of the attraction.

I still recall an iconic 1980's Renault (25?) ad in which the owner used his electric sunroof whilst debating with his wife the wisdom of handing the company car back and starting his own business. It made me really want one. Then I managed to blag one of the last Cortina Ghia's with a manual sunroof for a few years followed by a Citroen BX with a huge electric sunroof, that was cool. After that I had an Alfa Spider so the need for a car with a sunroof really wasn't there.

Big part of the reason for me having steered clear of them as well. I don't want to have to deal with bad sealing or clogged drainage which then causes water to get inbetween the roof panels. Someone else is welcome to deal with that issue if they want to have the sun beating down on them.

The Ewok is the first tin-top car I've had since 1989.

All the others have had sunroofs apart from the Brera and it's fixed glass roof.

The Saxo has a sunroof but it is a 2000 model. The blind is a proper fibreboard affair which keeps out all the direct sun but also blocks any vision. vision is not that good anyway since the glass is tinted.
The Giulietta has air con and is a 2011 model.

I think it is a case of either/or since there is little point in having both. Air con is, of course, much more efficient at keeping the car cool on a sunny day especially if you have the blind closed on the sunroof to prevent sunburn on a bald head (like mine)

Most fleet or company car specifiers will always opt for air con as it is deemed more upmarket (it has lots more moving parts, things to go wrong and costs more) hence there has been a dearth of cars with sunroofs on the used car market since four years after aircon become readily available in mass market vehicles.

Our 2002 Honda has the silly central one. Our 2001 S40 had one too. I don't really mourn their passing too much as I found they robbed an inch or two or headroom in cars with no adjustable seat height.

Tilt is the best feature on sunroofs.

This is probably the coolest configuration for a sunroof I've had:

I'm glad you like it.

It does a true tilt too. Oh, and the frickin' roof folds away too.

It has a proper heavy-duty pull-across cover.

Any more objections?

I've had a sunroof in all my cars

I'm not a fan of the current options on most cars including the Giulietta, I wish they'd give the option of just a standard sunroof instead of a double opening or full glass roof :HEADBANG:

Blueee pic included as all the cool kids have posted pics
