Garages - Why do they lie?

Took the girlfriend's Fiesta into the local garage the other day for a service. It's a 2 minute walk into the village - very convenient for us - so I thought we'd try them out, much easier than driving into the city or to a main dealer.

Anyway, the day before I noticed the washer fluid was empty so I filled it to the brim.

So I get the car back after the service and lo and behold, 1.99 for 1 litre of screen wash...

Why do they do this? I mean if they want to rip me off, stick another 1.99 to the price of the oil or something - I won't know the difference! To charge me 2 for screen wash when anyone could see it was absolutely full is just stupid.

So apart from the annoyance at being lied to, it makes me wonder what else on the service is total fiction. Needless to say I won't be taking the car there again... So they've lost our business for the foreseeable future, all for the sake of 2.

Re: Garages - Why do they lie?

Sorry to hear this.

Garages know they can get away with it (most of the times) so try it on. It's to do with the asymmetry of information about the car and the opaque servicing process.

Re: Garages - Why do they lie?

One of the best things about owning an Alfa was having a trusted, reliable specialist garage a few miles away!

I've been away since Monday when the service was done, but I'll definitely be checking the oil as soon as I can see the car in daylight.

Re: Garages - Why do they lie?

Talk to them about it. It may be a genuine mistake.

I used to start with the assumption that everything a garage told me was lie, and work back from there.

Once you've found a garage that you can trust, go that extra mile...

Re: Garages - Why do they lie?

I run a garage and I would have thought toping up the screen wash would have been included in the cost of the service.

Correct me if I am wrong.

Re: Garages - Why do they lie?

In my workshops, screen wash is part of the service, if the washer bottle is full we leave the small bottle in the car for the customer to use at a later date, they only cost us about 50p and is appreciated by the customer.

Re: Garages - Why do they lie?

Agreed, I would expect the garage to check the screen wash as part of the service... And if it needs any, top it up and leave the bottle in the car - fine. I've had that happen plenty of times before. But specifically charging for a bottle of screen wash that the car didn't need and that you haven't given them?

They've also charged me for an engine flush, which I didn't ask for and at 36k miles I don't think the car needed!

Never a truer word spoken. I go about 130 miles to a garage in another county to make sure my 146 is serviced correctly and that the garage know what they are doing too.

I hate that when garages think they can make a quick a buck at someone else expense never really got that type of marketing.

Re: Garages - Why do they lie?

Yep, been there, specifically filled the washer bottle before the service, got charged for it, was told it's a standard charge item.

Mate of mine worked at Audi, car comes in for service, the fitter is given a service pack for the car, half the parts go in the bin because it takes to long to fit and the client will never check.

Re: Garages - Why do they lie?

Usually things like screenwash are marked as "sundries" this is very unspecific and it makes it difficult to check what has actually been used. It could mean any fluid, or even rubber gloves for the mechanics..

Re: Garages - Why do they lie?

This has happened to me before and to my eternal shame, I said nothing about it. I don't mind being charged for it even if I've paid hundreds for a service (although to have it done FOC would be nice), but to be charged when the bottle was already full would have me seething now I am a bit older and wiser. Grrr!

Re: Garages - Why do they lie?

Try being a female - I took my Spider into the local dealer and asked them to check out my prop shaft, "no way thats causing a problem" they said. Two visits later they were very quiet about what they had done to stop the juddering and had to admit it was the prop shaft.
