Warning Drag racing with the Yakuza

Well I did something quite stupid today, as the title suggests

Was taking the oldest to school, when I come across a two way street with a car stopped right in the middle of my lane. I see a few people coming out and swapping places, all being fairly obviously Japanese mafiosi. Since this was taking time and I was running late, I decide to overtake and step on the gas, but the f*ckers start going for it too. I overtake, they start honking like crazy and overtake me again.

Then they slow down, I figure as a sort of a bait saying "do you want to play punk"? At which point I came to my senses and let them get on with their life and I with mine.

I tried to play it funny with my son, telling him that I was a bit late for school and shouldn't have been going so fast.

On the way back from the school, right around where this took place, I saw a police car with lights on driving about and a few policemen on foot. I wonder if those guys had just robbed a place or something.

But I feel now like a rightful idiot.

Re: Drag racing with the Yakuza

what is a Yakuza anyways

Do you have a local paper which might indicate why the police were there?

Re: Drag racing with the Yakuza

The Yakuza is the local organised crime syndicate.

Nah, don't think there are local papers, nor can I read them anyways

Re: Drag racing with the Yakuza

A big engined Toyota of some sort. Gold trims

They all looked quite young, which are the worst types as you don't really know how they'll react.

Well, this definitely stays away from Mrs BF, otherwise she'll go mental on me!

Re: Drag racing with the Yakuza

What's the deal with the Yakuza? I know from living in Hong Kong that the prevalance of Triad gangs is hardly something that should be seen surprising (I've had various encounters), but although there are areas you knew not visit at the wrong hour, in general they would leave us "white folk" alone. Is it a different mentality up there?

Not really, was quite cool (strangely!). Had the phone handy to call the police in case they stepped out and was just waiting for them to go away.

There isn't much upside for these guys to get into a fight over, well, a drag race.

They generally do I had the impression these guys were trying to get away from somewhere and somehow got stuck with me.

Re: Drag racing with the Yakuza

I have taken on Yakuza a few times on the road - they can be absolute dangerous nuts. Once just after a friend dropped me off (in his Impreza Sti) a black Mercedes (their car of choice) purposely cut him off. My friend honked so they stopped in the middle of the road and began to get out of the car. Was just a few 18-20 year old punks, but they looked tough and angry. My friend and I are both tall and are weight lifters so when they say that my friend wasn't about to back down and I was running down the street towards them they immediately backed down and got bacxk in the car and left (though they did this while cursing in street Japanese and had to speed recklessly off so as to not lose too much face). Most of them are just a bunch of bullies who aren't used to people standing up to them.

If it was a hopped up Toyota I would say that rather than being Yakuza it was probably "Bosozoku" which are the youth street gangs - most parade around in illegally loud bikes flouting all the red light signals, but there are also quite a few car gangs and Toyotas are one of their cars of choice...

Anyhow, I am just glad you are Ok and it didn't end up in an altercation (I once had I guy I didn't back down to pull out a metal pipe out of his trunk!).

Thanks Charlie.

A lesson learned to live and let live.

But I beat them in the drag race

PS: It happened at the corner in Roppongi where the Toriizaka slope starts (right by Roa Building).

Wow! One of those things where all of a sudden you're in way too deep. Good outcome, considering.

Can't help thinking what the 'honest dad' character off Man Stroke Woman would have said.* "Well son, the reason there was all that gunfire and blades flying around was because you didn't clean your football boots last night like you were told to and we were late this morning..."

*Disclaimer completely fictitious not based on actual events or living dead in between etc etc...
