Madness Continual rises in cost of fuel

10 consecutive rises in 10 weeks. Petrol at my local station is now 102.6p a litre, diesel 106p!

It's beginning to really **** me off now. Fuel protest time again I think.

It's absolutely disgusting - time for the government to realise this and drop some of the tax....

They haven't hammered us yet with gas prices. We are at half of your cost, $1.07 a litre. The States are at $.85 a litre. With the price of a barrel of oil up in the the high $90.'s I wonder when it will hit us?

Re: Continual rises in cost of fuel

Sorry

we still complain cause we liked the price of gas at .60 cents a litre. I guess we are spoilt and also we have the Alberta tar sands producing mega quantities of oil.

Re: Continual rises in cost of fuel

The govt need to introduce a flat rate tax on fuel, annually reviewed. At the moment they just put their hands up in mock powerlessness and say 'don't blame us, it's international market forces' (as the Millions of extra shekels flow into the govt coffers). What a load of tosh!

Re: Continual rises in cost of fuel

The thing is, obviously all the government officals etc, have to pay for fuel as well. Now I don't know how they do it (guarantee it isn't Key Fuel payment cards!), but they have to be suffering as well as the prices rise?

Re: Continual rises in cost of fuel

But remember, according to the government, the high levels of tax send out the right environmental message.

My profession is an environmental consultant, and even being someone who has an interest in seeing good environmental practice, I can still see that reason as a load of horsesh1te and everything to do with revenue.

And Hammy, am I correct in saying that MP's get a fuel allowance?

the uk produces huge quantities of oil as well from the north sea. it's just our government decides we can't be trusted with our money so they need to spend it all for us. the price of the petrol, distribution, retailer's mark up etc is approx 20p per litre, the rest is tax

Of course they do. Do you really think petrol would be taxed so heavily if those lazy, hypocritical ba**ards had to pay for it out of there own pockets??

Trouble is, it's all running out. The infrastructure to extract oil and refine it was supposed to last 25 years.. but most of it is a decade older than that now.

They won't build new stuff as the oil reserves left doesn't justify it. So, they're running an increasing oil demand through a creaking old infrastructure. When a part of it packs up, you get loss of supply.. hence the price goes up.

Whether fuel is taxed or not is largely irrelevant.. the problem is there's not enough refineries to meet demand and basically the black stuff is running out.

Who told you that

Sorry Ralf but that's not really true dude... given the money - via scaremongering spread by the Oil Companies themselves - that Oil is selling for per barrel at the moment they have the money to pursue all the projects that were - up until now - not financially viable !!
This industry hasn't been this busy since the 80's and there's a general shortage worldwide of personnel in the Oil & Gas Industry given the amount of projects that have suddenly been given the green light after years of sitting on the shelf and the mass redundancies that were made during the slump in the 90's !!

Hence the rate war currently raging in the UK !!

Don't believe the hype guys... there's still plenty of Oil out there !!

Oh, it's worse than that Gnomes. They get their mortgage paid on houses they do not posess. From the days when parliament could go way into the night, there is a system whereby they can get a 20k+ subsidy each year to pay for a house in London so they don't have to commute back to their constituency each night.
But parliament closes at a family friendly time each day these days. There's literally a three-figure amount of MPs who either have a London constituency so do not need it, or do not have a second home there anyway who are claiming this subsidy.
