'Detailing'

What does it mean?

I like washing my car, I like polishing it and paying attention to detail, but 'detailing'??? That's another stupid un-word that's crossed the Atlantic...... Just off to 'detail' the car darling.

No offence to anyone who likes to 'detail' their car but I will carry on cleaning mine.

Isn't detailing what servants do to keep their
master's house/limousine/boat in a tip top
state?

Not sure, but for me it goes straight to Room 101 along with other un-words like 'parenting'!!

Do I sound old?

I believe this may be a re-rant. Last time we covered not only the act of detailing but those individuals who pay £25 each for two buckets with which to do it.

I too am a cleaner not a detailer.

I'm a washer also, mostly with cold water and a soft brush.

The below link refers to going a step beyond Detailng, it's called "Correction". No it's nothing like that

Stunning but expensive results:

One seriously swirled black Lexus - Divine Detail - 350Z & 370Z UK

After spending 4 years keeping the Brera in tip-top-condition
(and getting literally jack more for it in pristine condition
compared to a local bump 'n' scrape example) I gave up on
regular wash/clay/waxing and now let the big machine do all the hard work.

I'm a washer also .

Spent £30 last year on products to clean & wax I thought that was expensive.Love washing and waxing normally every 2/3 weeks.

Few chaps at work (both have minis) spent £100 odd pounds getting their cars "detailed " last year, with some wax from a pandas ears no doubt .They looked nice after being done but 2 weeks later they looked a state .

Conclusion - Washing & Waxing £30 for a years enjoyment - Detailing -££££s same result !

There's definately an air of "Woo" in the
detailing products industry.

Wow! Stunning results from a clearly very anal owner. Amazing difference but the phrase "you can brush a dog, you can comb a dog....." springs to mind!

If you clan your car you use shampoo, if you polish it you use polish.

If you detail your car you use "Products"

IMO most of it is marketing hype from people who sell "Product"

I used to be a "cleaner", then a couple of years ago I was a bit badly, so I couldn't do it myself.

Now I just drive a quarter of a mile down the road, give a great bunch of east Europeans a fiver & get a much quicker, better job than I could ever do. I do consider less than 1,000 miles between cleans something of an overkill. . . why bother if it's going to get mucky again?

A once-a-year polish keeps it looking fresh.

I'm sure you've heard it before, but if not, "You can brush a dog, you can comb a dog..... But it's still a dog!"

Did this when the east Europeans first stared doing these car washes, realised when I looked at the paintwork at the next polish that they basically used acid cleaner and I had a lovely car with pitted paintwork. Good luck with that!

I only paid £30 for my 3 buckets! Wash, clean and wheels before people ask why 3 buckets instead of 2.

I'm not really sure what 'Detailing' is. A posh name for washing and polishing your car. Paint correction however..
Please don't wash your car with a scouring pad!!

Bird poo on the car, just wet it or put a wet tissue on it. Its hardly rocket science is it.

Then swill off. DOH.

I don't think you need to consult a detailer or buy "products".

You can polish an Astra, you can detail an Astra, but it's still an Astra.

Proof that you can polish a turd....

Astras have to be one of the worst cars ever.

Boring as anything, not especially good to drive, not especially reliable and not especially cheap.
