Boxing "Industry"

You can be said to work in an industry if you make stuff, or do engineering of some kind.

Music? Tourism? Entertainment? Football? Yachting?

Nah. That's just a job sector or a vocation.

So stop using the word "industry" to describe your area of employment.

Thanks!

Industry depends on banks for funding, marketing, sales and after sales but including the banks when they lend customers money to acquire the goods it becomes even more tenuous. Having said that, the finance arms of car manufacturers are a pretty significant part of their business.

Finance is not an industry.

In the same way that chess and pétanque are not sports.

I suppose technically I'm with Nev on this one. Can't say it winds me up though. Well, until I read the bit about the footballer, then I sort of got it more

Finance started with venetian merchants wanting the money for their raw materials before they'd got them back home and sold them?
That's the only connection between finance and industry. Tenuous? Yes.

On the other hand the Oxford Dictionary includes the definition:-

"A particular form or branch of economic or commercial activity"

Whilst the Cambridge includes:-

"the people and activities involved in one type of business:
the gas/electricity industry
the tourist industry
manufacturing industries
The computer industry has been booming." (My emphasis).

I think we must conclude that, like many words, the meaning has evolved from the original.

In answer to your newly formulated question which arose whilst reading this reply:-

"Yes I must get a life".

The important point is that Industry has largely been exported to China . However some of it is becoming economically viable to bring back here in Europe and we should be ready to get back into it instead of virtual stuff and selling containers of junk from China. Service industries are even more portable so we should use our intellectual properties here. The Germans have hung onto it !

Sorry, was it the yachting reference that set you off?

Crew use "The Industry" all the time but you never hear butlers or maids
(which, in effect, is what they are) using the term, do you?

Many moons ago, when I worked as a policy adviser, we once got a polite bollocking from a Treasury minister when working a specific project. The reason: we generally referred to trade sectors and traders and he wanted us to use "the industry" and "businesses". I suggested to my boss that we should use the expression "shower of *****" because that's what they were but he didn't feel it would be acceptable to everyone.

Social media companies and "Tech Roundabout" VC seekers certainly aren't.

On the other hand a large semiconductor fab company certainly would be in my books.

Also, anyone who uses the phrase "coder" or "coding" is probably not in a proper industry either.

I disagree. It's just people trying to "big up" what they do for a living.

Another of those American language imports, perhaps?

In about 18 months time I hope to have retired and be out of that industry, since that what I've been mostly doing for the last 30 years....
