Re: Life ruined by work

I suppose it all depends on how much you get paid to do it.
If you find yourself questioning it, then perhaps you need to address the issue directly.

Re: Life ruined by work

I had a job a couple of years ago, that meant I'd be called in at all sorts of hours. Very unsettling and stressful, money was'nt great either, so I decided to deal with it in the only way I could ; and got another job. Best thing I ever did, my ex-workmates also agreed.

Re: Life ruined by work

That all depends.

Are you an organ transplant surgeon? or working in IT? If so, it is worth the money (because you should be loaded). If not, then no way.

I ofetn find I am too busy working to make any real money. My time could be better spent as an Oil baron, or the owner of a Multi billion pound empire.

I saw "The Tudors" on telly... that Henry VIII looks like he had a good job...

If I see a vacancy for "King", then I'd apply for it..

You must be on a hell of a wage to get in at that time! They can kiss my balls for 3:55am.

Not necessarily, i'm not that highly paid for what I do but i potentially could also get 3am phone calls to get in the office. I work in IT and salaries fluctuate wildly, I wish I was on the market rate for what I do, i'd be driving round in a Maserati right now

I used to work early shifts and night shift
in some factories when I was a student.

Wouldn't do it now, but do work in an industry
where you're expected to drop everything
at short notice (inc holidays ) and go
help customers with their tight-scheduled projects.

But then you get paid a premium to deal
with it.

Re: Life ruined by work

No job is worth ruining your life for. To me, family comes before work, I've left 2 jobs now because of being sent to work in London. I told them "If I wanted to work in London I would be already, and on London wages, I didn't buy a house in Wales to live 150 miles away". Luckily the company I'm with now has won the next 8 years work in Wales so it's home every night (apart from the odd training course and business trip).

Re: Life ruined by work

I have been in that position recently (posted a thread in the Rant Room too ) and it was hell. It was only temporary (for about 6 months) so I could come to terms with it, though it was very tough.

All I can say is keep yourself focused and try to move as soon as you can.

Re: Life ruined by work

My jobs earliest shift start time is 03:25

The latest shift finish time is 01:30

We have shifts varying between those two, literally every day is different.

And no way, never in a million years could I go back to working 9-5. Sometimes those early mornings or late nights you see the world from a different, far more enjoyable perspective.

Re: Life ruined by work

I'm on call every fourth week, when I can get called anytime between one working day finishing and the next starting. The last time I was on call I didn't get one nights' peace, for three nights on the trot I was working until 2.30am, then the fourth night it was something I couldn't sort remotely so I had to go in to the office at 10pm until 3am.

For the money we make the company and the stress we're under, the pay really sucks, but what I do is so specialised that to do anything else I'd have to take a huge pay cut, retrain & start from the bottom, which I really don't want to do, so I guess I'm stuck with it for the time being

Happy happy happy

All the time. Hate my job now with a passion, just don't know what to do to get out of it. Whether to change career totally etc.

Thats how we were. Got fed up with writing off a whole week at once. Now we do one night a week each week mon-thur and then one weekend in four. Might help?

I know what your saying, big paycut for change of direction is not good, especially for running an alfa.

Never say never!

I know I have to do something, just a bit difficult as while I don't work shift work I end up staying late too often and by the time I get home just want to chill out.

Think you need to take a step back and reassess. If you keep looking another job will pop up. IT is good like that. Location has a huge affect on salary as they do fluctuate as has been mentioned above. Brush up the old cv mate.

Good luck

What he said. I used to work nights and week-ends for a fixed salary, no promotion and little visibility in 5 years. At that point, I realized that my salary was too low for the location and my level of experience, so I moved on to another employer.

Not to say that my conditions were that terrible, of course it's nothing like being a miner... but when you repeatedly realize that the crazy deadlines enforced on you over and over again, are artificial, or based on dubious judgment and second-guessing, you'll see no point in working long hours for no extra cash.

So, get that resume out, quick. You're bound to find another employer, even in the same field, that doesn't have requirements this harsh. You might even find an opportunity there that would allow you to work a side-move to another department. You never know until you try.

And remember to smile during your interviews and choose positive goals that make you want to get another job...
