Paranoia

Breezing along nicely on an open stretch of road when a white transit type van hoves into view, parked up on a grass verge, back doors covered in diagonal red/yellow stripes. Damn – a Talivan – hit the brakes. But no it was a damned EDF energy van tending to some pipes.

Further on, check mirrors – a van or estate is closing in from behind with an array of blue lights on the roof. Foot hovers over the brakes again, but no it’s a builder with a set of step ladders on the roof with the top step painted blue. Ar5e!

Later, a pair of hi-vis vest-wearers are standing on a corner looking toward me. Not again – the plod with nothing better to do than point hairdryers at law-abiding citizens, but 3rd time lucky – it’s a pair of navvies leaning on their shovels enjoying a roll-up.

3 instances of my attention being distracted from the job in hand by non-events but all brought on by the state paranoia with speed.

And is it just me or do AA road signs look like a gatso from a distance?

Re: Paranoia

That is why I don't think speed cameras in a lot of cases are very wise. You spend your time checking your speedo rather than the road.

One near us has caused a lot of accidents, and is placed on a 40mph dead straight road downhill with no houses on that stretch, go figure?

Re: Paranoia

Couldn't agree more, fear of being Gatsoed leading to stressed driving (ie danger). But hey, it makes a load of money for Gord.

Re: Paranoia

know what you mean - I've recently bought a cyclops which identifies fixed sites and mobile sites. Even with regular updates I still feel paranoid a new site may have been added!

Re: Paranoia

I do exactly the same thing. I don't have a good memory for speed limits so when theres no other cars around I tend to drive to the conditions, but always on the luck out for cameras. Luckily in N Yorkshire we don't have too many.
