Telephone numbers for websites.

Why is it that many commercial websites you go do not make it immediately obvious how to phone them?

You get their mission statement on their home page and endless crap about what they do.

If you go to their "contact us" tab then invariably it comes up as an email invitation.

Yes - if you hunt around you will eventually find a number but it is never obvious.

If I was advertising (that's all a website is) PaulR Services (steady on now) then the first thing you would see is the address and phone number on the home page.

Grr.

Cost cutting.

one-to-one customer support is very expensive.

I find the "chat" option pretty good for most companies.

I agree, sometimes through work I try and provide numbers for companies customers may have used but don't have contact details for, some are impossible, the only option is the send an email.
