Nurburgring times

I was in the metro centre today and Honda had a big stand with a few cars and they were making a big deal of the time the type R went round the 'ring'. Why is it these days car manufacturers are obsessed with the Nurburgring what's wrong other race tracks??? I'm not interested if the civic type R has went round in 8 minutes or any other car for that matter 99% of the public will never go to the Nurburgring or any race track it seems like a pointless exercise .
Is this just for bragging rights for car manufacturers and joe public in the pub??

I just spent all morning watching a VH1 special on Gwen Stefani. I don't know what a Hollaback girl is. All I know is that I want her dead.

I'm with you and James May on this. Occasionally it's mildly amusing when a 200,000 Ferrari has its arse handed to it by a cut-price Corvette with a "crude" pushrod V8 but it's mostly fairly irrelevant. I doubt my creaky old back and neck would last 500 yards in anything capable of a sub 8 minute lap.

Nothing Italian

It's also not representative of the real car as most manufacturers will boost the turbo, use special tyres etc.

Like the mpg figures, most people know it's irrelevant to the real world but it has become a sort of accepted performance benchmark just like 0-60 (62) times were bragging rights in the past.

The 'ring is a cliche way of getting your next sporty new car "spied" and teased into the media. Just drive it round disguised and the auto paparazzi will get it into magazines and on the web.

This months EVO (excellent piece on the 200k Alfaholics Bertone Coupe) points out that the Civic was tested as being slower than its competitors in real world driving, even on track and hinted at nefarious use of a lightened, tuned car with sticky tyres to get the headline 'ring time. Personally I find I get nauseous on track after 5 minutes so I would never last a full lap anyway.

And yes, it is pretty pointless in the real world. For road use I'd much prefer a more comfortable ride than pointless track times. If you want to do the track thing, get a track car. These super hot hatches with rock hard suspension and rubber band tyres are genuinely unpleasant places to be in on everyday roads.

Roll on the time that a Citroen type magic carpet ride is celebrated. I thought the old Rover 75 did the whole thing of putting 2 fingers up to the track fetishists rather well and would quite welcome a manufacturer doing the same now.

Aye, it was something he kept saying on Top Gear when Jezza and the Hamster kept harping on about 'ring times.

I thought this was a thread about a well-established German newspaper?
