This months EVO (excellent piece on the £200k Alfaholics Bertone Coupe) points out that the Civic was tested as being slower than its competitors in real world driving, even on track and hinted at nefarious use of a lightened, tuned car with sticky tyres to get the headline 'ring time. Personally I find I get nauseous on track after 5 minutes so I would never last a full lap anyway.
And yes, it is pretty pointless in the real world. For road use I'd much prefer a more comfortable ride than pointless track times. If you want to do the track thing, get a track car. These super hot hatches with rock hard suspension and rubber band tyres are genuinely unpleasant places to be in on everyday roads.
Roll on the time that a Citroen type magic carpet ride is celebrated. I thought the old Rover 75 did the whole thing of putting 2 fingers up to the track fetishists rather well and would quite welcome a manufacturer doing the same now.
