Customs at the airport, as well as immigration officials.

I apreciate their job is serious and that they can't really take any nonsense, but is there any need to be such miserable people?

Yes so was I. They like to do Christmas at work in France.

When I refused they asked why and I told them, "Because I hate kids."

They never, ever asked me again.

I called into a campsite in Ullswater 3 weeks ago, to ask about something and met at reception, what could only be described as probably the most miserable receptionist in Cumbria (However, she did appear from cleaning the toilets). Uncooperative, uninformed, and a deeply miserable piece of work. We left before she pulled a 12 bore out from under the desk.
I went to the next site and was greeted with a lovely smile and a willingness to go out of her way to be informative....They have our business for the 2016 season.

Anyone who works in my local tool station, it's like entering the Star Wars bar, I'm not saying I get served or shot at by someone with a long proboscis, but they are just as charmless.

I've taken to whistling the tune whenever I have to go in there.

I'm spotting a theme here...

It's anyone who has to work serving the general public.

As always, they have my sympathy.

I hate the way they ask what condition or medical reason means you need the appointment. Or at least in my old surgery they did. They only stopped prying when I lied and told them I needed an appointment because their daughter had given me knob rot.

Until they got out-sourced our county council customer services were dire. You were pretty much chastised for calling and the chances of being connected to the correct department was remote

Then BT somehow 'won' the contract to run customer services (I say "won" because there maybe evidence of a brown envelope under table scenario).

Now that people are having to work for a profit making organisation, the change of attitude could not be more noticeable.

Inland Revenue. Bunch of job preserving f***wits that cannot add up.

On the opposite end, admittedly a long time ago but DVLA. I imported my Lancia integrale in 2001, and spoke to someone on the phone who was a godsend when it came to filling out the forms.

I have to say, their general demeanour has to be 'somewhat restrained' for obvious reasons. But in the (sadly) personal dealings I've had with them, they've all been very friendly and helpful.

I've also had 'dealings' with them in my work life though, and when 'off the clock', they can't half knock back the old embalming fluid (so to speak).

Local Council Planning Dept.

You put your plans in. It doesn't matter how simple and 'compliant' they are, they will ALWAYS reject your first proposal. Jobsworth, pure and simple.

Therefore, make your first plan a lifesize mock-up of Buckingham Palace and work back from there. By the 3rd tweak, you'll have exactly what you wanted all along .

If you want love and hugs don't work for HMRC, a Gov office that will shmooze big businness and sweep their tax away and then chase joe public for a couple of hundred quid, cocking it up so much it takes 4 letters to then demand it be paid by cheque Still I guess processing those cheques keeps the jobs safe It probably cost more in admin than they got from me.

I didn't know they still had people working for them. In fact, last I heard from an insider, they were still processing refunds and claims from last October and are on the verge of collapse because they have no staff.

Can't help but think things would be alleviated if they moved with the times and didn't demand payment via cheque.
