Behavioural targeting

I've been trying to find some decent drill bits so a Google search found some I've bought them job done, but no! ads for drill bits keep following me around every forum I go on.
But now I've got a new web stalker...... Van monster, today i was taking my company vehicle in for a service with the hirer Northgate, they had ads up in the waiting room for 'van monster' which appears to be a way of them selling ex hire vehicles. A quick google in the waiting area to see what they've got has resulted me been followed by this ad.
I don't get this kind of advertising if I've googled what I want to buy why hound me weeks later with the same product I've bought or decided not to buy????
If they insist on advertising show me something I've never seen before!
It's just ****ing me off now I'm not interested in a white Peugeot partner van!!!!!!!

I just spent all morning watching a VH1 special on Gwen Stefani. I don't know what a Hollaback girl is. All I know is that I want her dead.

Simple remedy . . . don't use Google! I use DuckDuckGo. It's a good search engine which doesn't track or profile users.

I still get ads for stuff I lost interest in or sold years ago.

Not on here though, I'm ad free while on here. When I go on Ebay or Amazon

The ID is an important part of our personality because as newborns, it allows us to get our basic needs met. Freud believed that the ID is based on our pleasure principle. In other words, the ID wants whatever feels good at the time, with no consideration for the reality of the situation.

Is this why people like shopping then?

just set your browser to automatically delete your browsing history every time you log off.

And use duckduckgo.

Sorted.

Said it before - proxy with ad filtering and tracking filtering. I don't get any of this contextual cross site advertising any more. I get the really stupid stuff in eBay because I am logged on. "We see you bought a rusty 156 last week, would you like another".....noooooo.....

Amazon do this. You buy a pair of slippers, and they keep offering you slippers for the next 6 months.

I get that I looked at slippers, but I bought some, do you not think that suggests I'm probably OK now?

If you're old enough to wear slippers, you probably keep forgetting where you put them so you need a few pairs? .

Iphone - new IOS allows ad blockers.

Android - you can still install Ad block plus.

The best solution remains higher up in the network. Any device using my wifi, ad blocked or not, does not see ads - they're stripped out of the pages before the device even sees them.

It's very good for stopping ads, but when used with AVG Do Not Track, it's even better

Using DNT stops google collecting any info on your browsing/shopping habits and using it to target ads at you

The trackers are just websites like any other. They put a tag in your page that resolves back to one of their servers. When I load Alfaowner, I see trackers from Facebook, twitter, adnx, googleadservices, amazon-adsystem, scorecardresearch, rfihub, nexac. I also see a performance tracker from Newrelic, which is not quite the same. This, of course, is at work, with a largely unfiltered connection. They see nothing of my activity at home (which is actually where I buy stuff) - all of that rubbish resolves to a big fat zero, and even if I have cookies on my laptop from work browsing, the link to the tracker sites is not there.

The dynamic with IOS is going to get interesting. Apple is in it to sell hardware and services. Google is there to sell ads. Apple may well put themselves in a position where all of the mobile devices become much more ad hostile (good) - Google cannot do this with Android as they will cannibalise the core business. Ad blockers are apparently the most popular app in IOS 9.....
