Nostalgic facebook pages

The ones about the history of specific places. I follow a couple, one for where I live now and one for where I was born. It’s the users rather than the actual concept I have an issue with. It all starts off very interesting in a local history sort of way. Some old resident posts a picture of how it was 50 years ago and you can see how the area has changed. It’s really interesting where I live because it used to be very industrial and is now almost entirely residential. Those who have seen my various “Further adventures….” Picture threads will know how much I like dragging the dog along disused canal towpaths.

It’s great for a while and then it becomes really popular. And then it changes. No longer is it local history, suddenly it’s first world problems.

“A dog has **** on Ringley Meadows. I spotted it last night and it was still there this morning. I have called the council but they can’t help (why do I pay my council tax?). Does anybody know who did it?” There may be a photo to support the post, there may not. At this point 60 other people chip in saying how disgusting it is and how those responsible should be tarred and feathered. A further 45 people then add to the discussion saying these people bring shame on responsible dog owners. Once this happens, the genie is out of the bottle. “Bolton in history” becomes “Real time reports of dog **** in Bolton”.

Once the dog **** police are on board, the ambulance chasers join the party “I’ve just seen an ambulance coming down the hill into the village” (which isn’t a village at all). “I hope nobody has been seriously injured. (But if they have, please can someone post all the lurid details and embellish them as much as possible?)” Obviously they don’t actually say that, but that’s what they mean.

“I’ve just seen three police cars. Anyone know where they were going?” This can be roughly translated as “Has someone been burgled? I hope it was them at number 64 because I’ve never liked them. Please can someone report the details and ideally name the person responsible, even if none of it is true?” Thus 13 burglaries and a stolen car get blamed on Joey Billy even though Joey Billy died in 2007. Joey Billy’s Mum gets her windows put through and her dog poisoned.

If there are no police incidents, it just gets banal fill in the gaps.

“Who remembers green shield stamps?”

This has **** all to do with where I live but this doesn’t stop them:

“Yes. I do”
“My mum used to collect them”
“My gran still has some.
“No. I’m only 13 though”
“Yes. I do”
“My mum used to collect them”
“My gran still has some.
“No. I’m only 13 though”
“Yes. I do”
“My mum used to collect them”
“My gran still has some.
“No. I’m only 13 though”
“Yes. I do”
“My mum used to collect them”
“My gran still has some.
“No. I’m only 13 though”
“Yes. I do”
“My mum used to collect them”
“My gran still has some.
“No. I’m only 13 though”

And on and on and on it goes.

Do I ****ing care who remembers green shield stamps?

Casual racism is always popular too.

“Wot about all these mygrants”
“Its’ shocking”
“I cant get an apointment at the doctors’”
“We haven’t got room”
“We should look after our own first”
“Why cant we give them gun’s and send them back”
“Its like a forren country”
“Someone broke in my shed the other night”
“They serve allall food in prisons too”
“Disgusting”
“They’ve all got Xboxes too”
“And SKY”
"That Nigel Farridge has go the right idea"
"I'm with Enoch"
"Everything in his Rivers of Babylon speech has come true"

As is historic unpleasantness

“Remember that peedo who lived on Egerton Street?”
“We used to chuck eggs at his windows on the way home from school”
“He used to go in my dads buchers shop. My dad used to spit in his mince”
“We chased him out of the park once by throwing stones at him”
“He used to have kids going into his house nearly every night”
“Dirty old *******”
“Didn’t he hang himself in the park?”
“Yes. Good riddance”
“Didn’t he turn out to just be a piano teacher?”
“Yes he did. He taught me. He was really nice”
“His wife died really young. She was nice too.”
“Oh well. It was different then though wasn’t’ it? Most men who, lived on there own were a bit funny”
“Tru dat”

Spelling and punctuation optional and sometimes creative. Intelligence, rarely detected.

What’s worse than all of that is that I can’t bring myself to ignore it. I fear I’m actually worse than they are.

Auto Express - six issues for a quid. Offer must end soon (and then immediately start up again).

I like that.
I'm like that.
Perhaps just a little less vociferous.

Here's wishing you well

Close your feacesbook account and be free of it

I have nothing to do with Feacesbook, it's just another annoyance you don't need in your life.

The one I am on has a few jokers, me included, and some good admin folk who delete the **** posts or posts with nothing to do with memories.
Or we trash threads that have already been done to death by going totally of topic and that's when you realise some people either don't get sarcasm or irony or are plain think.
There were loadsa pictures this week about glorious sunsets! That's not a feckin' memory, that's normal! Thread trashed!

Very good KB,

it does seem that Good Ol' Enoch's Speech isn't quite as I'd remembered, must be the glue from all those Co-Op stamps.

I was on three (now two) connected with Croydon.

I left one of them because it became an outpost of "Britain First". It seems that they want to go back to the late 1950s and early 60s (when I was a child and later in my teens) before it was ruined by all the "immigrants".
I made a reasoned argument in support of people from wherever in general and got the reasoned reply, and I quote:-

"You are a F'ing C".

Hard to argue with such impeccable logic - so I just bowed out.

I had similar. I got into an outright argument with one guy who was blaming everything on black b*******, and defending the BNP, it turned out he was friends with the main group admin too!

Continual posts from Britain First and ukip. It wasn't so much an interesting page on the past of Dartford but a right wing outpost, that was utterly shameful. The council leader was getting involved with the group and actually posting useful information to the group and listening to people. I left when one guy, who it turned out had previously been a ukip press guy started posting banal Photoshopped council poster of the council leader.

There were similar outbursts on immigrants, with the classic gem where someone was moaning that the drunks in town were all foreign now. It amused me, and I responded as such, that later that day I went into town and passed some very English drunks and the Poles were being respectable having coffee in Costas.

I got kicked out of another group when I had the audacity to pick someone up on the fact that they posted one of my photos without giving any credit.

There has been a development. The dog**** police have faded into the background. It's become "Does anyone know any crap tradesmen?"

It started as "Can anyone recommend a good garage in the area?". There is an MG specialist literally 2 minutes away, great bunch, really helpful. A mile away there is another garage that is just your average non-specific repair and MoT place. You will have seen pictures in my threads because he's been MoTing and welding my cars for 15 years or more.

Both places were recommended then some one chips in with "I wouldn't go to the one at the top of the hill. I took my car to him and he said he didn't have time to look at it" This might be because he's always really busy but more likely is that he's lazy. "He had a quick look and said it was my power steering but I'd have to bring it back on Thursday. I took it to Kwik fit and they said it was the steering rack not the power steering. I left it with them and they said it should be ready by Friday"

So Barry at the top of the hill missed out on business because he misdiagnosed a fault as a power steering fault not a steering rack fault (WTF?) and because he said bring it back on Thursday instead of leave it with me until Friday.

This **** is going on every ****ing day. It's nearly as annoying as self-service checkouts.

The 'signal to noise' problem is the main reason I have no desire to do social media. In the good old days, some crusty bloke would write a book about the village/canal/thing, and the style might be a bit odd, but the information would be decently curated and you knew what you were getting. The crusty blokes moved onto the web, and created text 'n images websites with flashing email links. Again, probably a bit weird, but solid enough.

Now you just get the ****e you describe. This is curation for the 'me' generation, where dog crap and what you had for tea is vital information that must be disseminated. I don't get it, I'm probably too old or something.

After another round of dog **** related finger pointing tonight, I have left the group which caused me to start this thread.

It had served its purpose before turning to ****. After all, you'd read the history to start with and that shouldn't change now.

But I hope you told them about your mate's garden. I think it's an immigrant dog from your village as well. Please ask all dog owners if they can account for their dog's movements (!) and if they've seen any foreign looking dogs coming and going on other lawns.

So, when you say nostalgic, it's a kind of "I remember when all this was fields not covered in dog eggs" kind of deal?
