Not Happy Workers cutting corners...

We got some quotes and brought someone in to sort our front and back garden. Due to availability we didn't end up with our preferred choice and we now regret it. New turf was laid at the back and a membrane and stones at the front. The work came with a 10 year guarantee. 6 weeks later and weeds are growing through the stone and membrane at the front and between the turf and in the surrounding border at the front.

My initial e-mail enquired about how deep the had dug down to clear the weeds we had originally. "visible weeds" was the response. Which means "as little as possible. We had asked them to come on a day when I or my wife was around as we wanted to keep an eye on progress and be on hand to answer any questions. They requested to come down a day early for delivery of materials which then became "as we need to lay the turf". I arrived home from work to find it almost completed. After they had allegedly finished and gone I had a look to find their idea of a wavy line was worse than a 2yr old trying to draw a straight line without a ruler and that they'd laid the slate down the side without any membrane or removed/levelled a small tree stump that had been agreed. They came back next day and "fixed" those initial issues but now this...

Not French but fully legal that I'm aware of. I insist on paying by cheque or card, not cash as there is a paper trail should it be required (may not stop them fiddling the books but riskier)...

If you paid by cheque I take it after six weeks its cashed? Too late to stop card payment?

10 year guarantee?

I understand you wanting the work done sooner but theres a reason the good guys are booked up far in advance. Made the same sort of mistake myself. A few times.

If we weren't trying to sell the house we'd have waited longer. It's not that what they did was bad, just that they didn't do all they should have - poor prepping of the ground.

Good luck with the sale. The new owners will probably rip it up and deck it anyway!

I don't know why workers do this. Surely if you do a fantastic job, or at the very least a good job you have a happy customer and potential for repeat business. Whats more, word of mouth spreads so they may get more work on the same street.
