People who curse their children with stupid names

Prompted by the posh couple we came across on holiday (not that posh or they wouldn't have been on the same holiday as us) who had chosen to call their children.......

Algernon (Algy for short) and Araminta (minty for short - fyi that's a girls name). At one point at the pool they felt the need to call for 'Algy' using ALL of his stupid, pretentious, faux upper class middle names. I can't remember them all.

What are they thinking of? Don't they realise their kids will forever be cursed by the stupid names their parents have given them. People will make instant judgments at the point of introduction (pretentious parents, spoilt brat - which they were) which the poor kids will either have to work to contradict, or fulfil. It's a no win scenario for the children.

It's a parents duty not to **** up their kids and virtually the first act they have to do as parents (naming the kids) they fall at the first hurdle and go straight to the Philip Larkin book of parenting skills This Be The Verse by Philip Larkin : The Poetry Foundation

It seems to be a feature of the extremes of society with both the middle / upper and lower social classes indulging themselves (For info: We do still have a class system). I am actually more tolerant of the lower socio economic groups doing this than I am upper.

Any other examples of really bad kids names?

My wife's cousin lives in Canada and has named his boy Huckleberry.

Not so bad I hear you say, well no, a bit weird but not the worst example I've heard.

But just wait there a minute. His middle name is Sparkles. I fell about laughing when she told me.

It seems to be different these days you have to give your kid a twątty name with no consideration to the poor childs future grief.

I used to work with a bloke who named his child Gulliver.

It seems to me that if you saddle your child with a ridiculous name, the child then has every right to be horrible. It's the parents' punishment for being twarts.

In the early 80's at first school a boy called Elvis joined my class, think he'd been expelled from his last school and didn't last long there either, he got a lad up against the the wall with a pair of scissors to his throat.
We were warned beforehand by the teacher not to take the p!ss
Don't expect he went on to great things.

Then again my daughter is called Rockie Alanah, my choice of name. do I give a **** what other people think? Nope.

Are you sure they weren't just referring to the lack of pool maintenance, leading to a dangerous and slippery green slime around the edge of the pool?

For sheer inventiveness (from the man who brought us Mothers of Invention), I think it's hard to top the names that the late musician Frank Zappa bestowed on his children, starting with the eldest, Moon Unit, who was followed by Dweezil, Ahmet, and Diva Muffin.

Granted, it may be difficult with a family name like Zappa to find a suitable given name...and it's unlikely that Mr Zappa cared a jot what anyone thought of his choices in all things.

Unless it's another of those place of conception ones. They'd had a very heavy night, they were at the side of the road, and she was poorly.

And they carried on the Zappa family tradition of, eh, poetic children's names.

Moon Unit's daughter is named Mathilda Plum.

Dweezil's daughters are named Zola Frank and Ceylon Indira.

Ahmet's daughter is named Halo Violetta.

All three are divorced, which I suppose passes for normal.

Algy and Minty are seeming almost prosaic by comparison.
