Council Carparks

Hi All

I went up into the Brecon Beacons the other day for some great sightseeing and driving. I stopped off in a few places, and unfortunately for me the day was marred by one car park issuing me a Penalty Charge for 'Vehicle parked other than wholly within a marked bay' ... I know my photograph shows I am guilty.

I take great pride and care with my car and always try to park well away from everyone else to avoid careless damage by other car park users.

When I entered the Abergavenney car park it was empty at the rear half and I was the first to park in the row, well away from everyone else. I had no other car to gauge my position against and I pulled up to what I thought at the time was the front of the bay. In hindsight I can see the mistake I made was due to the trench marking that runs parallel to the row in front of me. I could not find the jobsworth car park attendant to speak to ... probably hiding somewhere whilst watching me and sniggering to himself.
I have appealed against the Penalty Charge. I wonder how many other unfortunate people have made the same mistake?

Earlier in the day I parked in the Crickhowell car park which cost 70p for 1 hour and 1.30 for 2 hours. I only had 1.27p in change so I bought 1 hour for a 1. The machine did not give change . Walking back to the car I stopped to talk to the car park attendant and explain the situation. I asked him if he would give me some leeway on the time should I arrive back a little late, especially as I had paid over the odds. He replied "No problem. I noticed you driving in. What a nice car you got."

Bummer

Looks like you are about to do some AO research into how reasonable Abergavenny are, best of luck!

Some council car parks here are now occupied by travelling ethnic folk who don't pay a damn thing!

Oh and they get portaloos and skips to put their c**p in.

i'm sorry but that parking is kinda retarded. Not much sympathy. The bay is perfectly clear. You have zero chance of a successful appeal.

Nice car though.

I wouldn't use quite such colourful language as valinco but it does appear that the lines are clearly marked. I will wish you the best of luck though.

Oh how I sympathise! It's not like there's a bleedin' obvious white line, is it. Doesn't improve your case using the "jobsworth" slur. . .

As for the "ethnic" comment: we're all ethnic.

Yes i've just re-read that. I don't mean to be offensive. I was just amazed that you could be surprised by getting a ticket.

Good luck with your appeal but if it was me I'd be taking that one on the chin.

As I said in my original post the photograph clearly shows I'm guilty and I am annoyed with myself for making such a stupid error. But in my defence the drainage/trench mark was misleading as it is the logical place for the line marking to be as it is parallel to the row in front. Perhaps it is deliberate to generate revenue? Also what do you deem as 'parked other than wholly within a marked bay'. The front of the black 4x4 at the other end of my row is sticking out. The backend of the MPV in the row in front of me is sticking out. Where do you literally draw the line? This offence IMHO is intended for those who selfishly park across two bays thus losing potential revenue for the council.

I'm not that daft to slag the attendant or the council off ... yet! My letter to the council is courteous and polite. I have asked them look favourably upon me to recognise the offence committed was a genuine mistake and committed in innocence, and to rescind the offence.

I shall post the outcome. I'm not expecting a favourable response. Bureaucracy is heartless!

Hands up all those who park perfectly within the lines, everytime!

Fully understandable. Who would ever believe that some boldly painted white lines in the form of a rectangle would indicate a parking bay in a car park? I'd laugh at myself and cough up.

I'm sure the people of Abergavenny will be delighted that their Council Tax money is being spent wisely fighting a frivolous appeal against a Penalty Charge.

I could understand if you were blocking the way in a busy car park, but clearly you are not and the car park is half empty.

My Dad once got a ticket while he was at the pay and display machine in a council car park in Dartford, he went to the council offices as his ticket from the machine had an earlier time than the penalty and was told it wasn't the first time it had happened.

I fight every parking ticket and have had considerable success, but that is blatant. The car wheels need to be within/on lines of box and body over hang is not a violation.

I got to thinking the other month when i got my car MOT'd and i now find no tax nor mot disc in windscreen that a set of special plates might be useful for avoiding penalty charges, ...im not saying i would but that thought did occur.

I reckon you should get a 156 or a 159 instead.

Every time I park up, I turn around to admire the beauty and, as a bonus, also get a glimpse of how I've parked. If I've made a balls-up, I go back and correct it!

However, I'd probably do the same if I had a GTV!!

Sorry to disappoint the schadenfreude few but the car park administrator let me off. .

Thank you to all who wished me luck with my appeal. If you don't ask you don't get.

It's hard to express feeling and emotion in writing but the aim of my post was to highlight the difference in the two car park attendants, and to show parking outside of the box will also get you a ticket, not just over-running on time.

Lesson learnt!
