American Independence Day

Why do we, not in the US, feel the need to celebrate this

At work our canteen is having an American Independence day, we have lots of american food (not too bad) its just the theme that is irritating me. Why are we celebrating the independence day of another country

Have we forgotten in this country what thier independence day means, it was the war with us and we lost, even if we take it as a nice way to show the end of colonialism why do we not do the same on any of the other countries independence day.

Why are we becoming more American

What on earth are your bosses thinking of? Ridiculous!

The Yanks never miss an opportunity to rub our noses in it, and frequently refer to us as 'colonialists', as well as belittling us at every opportunity.

Go down the pub for lunch and boycott it!

I thoroughly dislike the fact that when people say "the civil war" they tend to be referring to the American one. It's good fun to confuse them by asking them to stipulate whether they are referring to the first or second civil war.

Perhaps we should start celebrating each commonwealth members independence day with bank holidays! Just think of the number of holidays!!!!!!!!!

That's because the French have a stronger national identity than we do (which can be a 2-edged sword of course), as well as the fact that they don't delude themselves they have some sort of 'special relationship' with the US (as we do, when infact pretty well all the benefits go one way, ie across the pond in the other direction).

It's the same as the English idiots who celebrate St Patricks day, just so they can get pis**d, but couldn't tell you when St Georges day is.

We once had a St David's day canteen effort and it was the most desperate job ever. Leek and cheese bake I think.

You do realise, that if they introduce siesta you'll be knocking off work at 7pm, don't you?

You need to think Caerphilly before you say something like that.

Our Irish-American neighbour organised a family gathering - Yanks flying in from every state - and this afternoon is their get-together barbecue. The neighbour roped us into helping and we acquiesced, little realising it was the 4th today. I shall be drinking.
