"Can you come and fix my computer?"

Why do people expect you to "fix" their computer,
yet when you propose they come round and clean
your flat (inc. scummy bath and toilet) they
take offence?

Just because there's a PC on my desk at work,
how does that make me an IT guy?

And why do people think reading random stuff
from Windows menus over the phone to you will
fix their PC either?

I never even touched a PC up until about 4
years ago when we had our Sun workstations taken
away and everyone had to use laptop.

'kin getting sick of it. Offer to go round in the afternoon
but no, Saturday evening is more "convenient" for them.
Damn cheek of it!

They still think you are a clever chap in spite of how you feel Nev, so pay them a courtesy' by saying something very rude, and become a reclusive loner for ever, like me!.

Re: "Can you come and fix my computer?"

I used to to say, straight out, "150 Euros/hour" ZF.
Which used to send 'em scuttling away.

But people now just laugh and carry on talking
about whatever is wrong.

Another good one was, "Why is my computer so slow now
and it always has viruses?"
"Because your husband/boyfriend keeps downloading
porn from dodgy websites? Maybe?"

That one used to cause all sorts of problems

Re: "Can you come and fix my computer?"

I know how you feel.

I am an IT guy who can fix PCs but when I get back from work the last thing I want to do is fix somebodies PC, so I don't. I'd only consider it for 1 or 2 close friends.

You can get guys on scooters to come and fix them now, rather like having a pizza delivered.

Re: "Can you come and fix my computer?"

Told you chaps the story regarding No1 son. Programmer, analyst on mainframes for EDS. Came to visit with a Black Belt morphing program he popped on my 486 for me, which subsequently crashed the lot back to DOS. Son said he had to get back to London to go clubbing with his mates, and anyway, told me I knew more about my PC fixes than he did. Skived out of it, I reckon.: Tried not to bother him too much, because he worked so hard for BoA, before throwing in the towel with computing, to become a personal trainer.

Nice lad,(well he is much bigger than I!)

Re: "Can you come and fix my computer?"

This is actually the way that my girlfriend and I got together. When I first met her she was with somebody else so I backed off as soon as I found out. One year later when she was over with the other guy she called me and asked me to go to her house and fix her laptop that "would not turn on". It "unexplainably" turned on when I pressed the power button and we are still together after 3 years.

I'm a field apps engineer for an electronic design automation company.

(Translation when introduced by friend: "He works with computers.")

Re: "Can you come and fix my computer?"

My sister did it to me the other week.

I don't have the luxury of getting back before 6PM like she does, had just got in at about 7:30 and the phone rings.

"my broadband doesn't work, come round and fix it"

Worse though is when someone blatently doesn't have a clue and has tried to fix it themselves and is too embaressed to admit what they did. I might be able to fix it in half the time if you tell me which system files you thought were a virus

Re: "Can you come and fix my computer?"

.... it's the phone calls from relative strangers that get me -

"Is that Dan...... so and so give me your number I was wondering if I could ask you a quick question?.....(you just did) .......we bought a PC from PC world and got Tesco broadband and it's been good but today I 've just tried to log on to the internet and it's coming up with some error.....it was fine yesterday"

"hhhmmm, whats the error say"

"page not found or summat" -

"can you read exactly what it's says"

"Oh, I've switched it off now...... thing is I can't understand it, it worked yesterday - it's an Packard Bell 6210... any idea whats up?"

"Is your anti-virus software up to date?"

"I think so, it came with Norton....is that good?"

"when did you last up date it"

"Ohhh, I dunno, I'm not right good with these - we got it for us digital camera..... like I say it worked yesterday..... should I call Tesco's....."

and then there's the.....

"I've got broadband and we wanted a wireless internet so I've bought a router but I can't seem to get it to work, I've stuck the disk in and it come up it was installing but now it don't work.....all the lights are on.... should I take it back?" calls.......

......I fecking hate PC world...... there should be some kind of PC driving test that you have to pass before you can buy one.... !!!

.........stressed out IT guy..... can't you tell !!!....

I've got a hubby like you people ask him to fix their computers all the time. He's too nice and usually goes to their place and after several hours has it up and running. He used to charge $65cdn an hour (10 years ago) but gave up the home business when it took over his life.

Sometimes they give him a bottle of wine nice, except he doesn't drink
