People who can't spell or punctuate.

Bad spelling and punctuation drive me nuts!!!

It is especially irritating when the error makes the sentence difficult to read or ambiguous.

I am sorry to sound so grumpy and pedantic: my mum was an English teacher!

A very good point. It's funny how people who learn English as a foreign language are often more "correct" in their use of grammar though!

I suppose I do have a few bug-bears though (e.g. misuse of the apostrophe drives me nuts) and I also realise I may be setting myself up for intense scrutiny of all my posts from now on, and therefore perpetual ribbing!!!

Surely the above sentence needs some work? I thought that a comma before 'and' was an example of poor punctuation?

That's because we are more afraid of making fools of ourselves by doing a stupid and funny mistake, so we are more careful when proofreading our post before we post it.

Re: People who can't spell or punctuate.

This is great, two paragraphs with the same words but different punctuation, so a completely different meaning:

Dear Mother,
In law, there is nothing to make me say thank you, but the quality of your gifts compels me at least to write to tell you how I feel. Thank you so much for the presents! I was expecting nothing more than a token yet, again, you have exceeded even your own incredible standards.
It was a shame you had to stay here for such a short time. I thought I might have coped, but it was unbearable seeing you leave. The relief was immense when I heard we might see you again soon. I wanted to end it all by saying goodbye now. I hope I will not have to say it to you again for a long time. If you have the opportunity to spend Christmas elsewhere next year, please do not.
Much love
norbert

Thank you for proving me right. The rules I was taught (many years ago) for use of the comma included precisely that! However, more "creative" use of the comma does, I feel, make a long sentence easier to read, and does not obscure the meaning or make ambiguity. It marks, if you like, a little pause, if you were to read the sentence aloud.

As I understand it, this is no longer a "rule" taught in English lessons.

Hmm I think I have over-done the use of commas in this posting!

Re: People who can't spell or punctuate.

To be honest I have difficulty with spelling, I know this and I try very hard not to make mistakes.

I take a long time to post, as I run a spell check, proof read a couple of times and quite often Google words to make sure I'm using them in the correct context.

I have also checked out grammar websites at times to try and make sure my posts are as grammatically correct as possible.

despite all this I'm sure I still make many spelling mistakes, and my there/their's, where/were's, to/too's, of/off's, commas, apostrophes, etc. are probably all over the place.

I would like to apologise to anyone who has in the past or will in future take offence at my terrible spelling/grammar, I'm not doing it purposely to annoy anyone, I'm obviously just a bit stupid.

Double negatives in a sentence drives me to distraction. Silly, I know, but it just irritates the hell out of me.

Quite. It is worse in conversation than in lyrics IMHO.

Like "I've not got none of them, mate".

Sorry Alfaredthegreat, I did not intend to hijack the thread but they are related, I think.

I agree with most of the things you all say about spelling and punctuation here, and especially regarding native non-English speaking nations speaking and writing it better than most of us (or, should I say, better than what most of us do?) I find particularly galling the words 'yes' and 'no' being used concurrently in a sentence, or just the questioning word 'yes?' used several times in the same sentence. You know what I'm saying, yes?
I never use spellcheck on here, and never preview my posts, and generally regret it when I see myself in print.

Re: People who can't spell or punctuate.

I went on a (BBC run ) writing course
a few months back and it really highlighted
the (bad) state of our English.

I do not remember being taught any grammar
at school. And I feel cheated about that.

Thank the lord for Firefox spell checker.

That's exactly the boat I'm in Nev!
I also find myself, as a poster above, using commas as the written equivalent of a pause for breath. I actually find myself with a lot of posts going back through and removing extraneous ones!

Don't apologise - it's me. I am just grumpy today!

Err, no. "bad spelling and punctuation" is a plural.

e.g.
Bad spelling drives me nuts.
Bad punctuation drives me nuts.
Bad spelling and punctuation drive me nuts.

Goes like:
He drives me nuts.
They drive me nuts.

These are both examples of a "style issue". Either is fine I think. I prefer mine.

I've not never seen any double-negatives on here..... You must get ****ed off with footballer interviews then! And Mark Blundell on ITV formula one coverage - He never doesn't use anything else
