National Anthem at events

This has been done before but here goes anyway. We (just the English at the moment afik) have started doing the traditional USA thing of yawpin the National Anthem solo at major sporting events . It's a frickin awful anthem at the best of times. This is just illustrating how crap it is. Not long before we have some witney houston wannabe singing Gah ah ah ahahhd say ayyay ayve the Quee ee eeeee eeeeeeeen. Pillocks.

Crazed Re: National Anthem at events

I agree, even if not English, it is a poor excuse for a tune. Yet again the Italians have it right. I love their's, it just seems good fun

I had to laugh, a while back there was a debate about a Scottish anthem. It was close between 'Flower of Scotland' (durge, durge, we hate the English and want to kill them all, durge, durge) and a tune (no lyrics) called Highland Cathedral, OK, bagpipe tune, downside, it's a durge and was written by a German

And the moral of this is that the Scotts behave as if we all live in tartan shortbread tins

Our anthem has to be done in 3 of the the 11 offical languages. It starts off in Xhosa, switches to English and finish in Afrikaans.

Re: National Anthem at events

National Anthems and sport just make me sigh.

Why does it matter if when:-

Someone kicks a ball about
Someone drives a car about
Someone runs quickly
Someone bats a ball
Someone throws a dart
Someone sails a boat
Someone does any other physical thing

That they come from (or even worse REPRESENT) a particular country?

Nonsense.

I do like the Italian Anthem though - it does not sound in any way serious - good on it.

Paul.

No mate, I do as well in the appropriate situation. Respect and loyalty to our country has nothing to do with liking the tune.

I like our anthem, Oh Canada, we stand on guard for thee, easy to sing The States has a hard one but a lot of Canadians know all the words, the US doesn't even know where Canada is most of the time, so most don't know ours.

Our one in Ireland has to be the best...it's in the Irish language which most of the people here can't speak so most people make it up....it's great

Re: National Anthem at events

Frank's right. Flower of Scotland would be completely the wrong choice and given it's lyrics would make us appear hypocrits when complaing about God save the Quinn.

No, for me I'd choose 500 miles by the Proclaimers 'cos everybody starts dancin at the end of it.

Not sure what the lyrics are like for the Italian NA but loved the song they chose for the Rugby:- "Stringe mi corte.."

Come on BF, loup in and keep us right.

I always thought Jerusalem would make a better national anthem than God Save the Queen... Or maybe Land of Hope and Glory.

Re: National Anthem at events

I thought 'God Save The Queen' was the British (UK) national anthem, not the English one, why is it played at English sporting events.

Wales have their own, and Scotland have made their own up, why don't the English choose one of their own as well? Perhaps a quick phonecall to Chas 'n Dave - sorted!

I tend to stand up everytime. Raised the father in law's eyebrows. He is an anti royalist yorkshireman who was born in Northern Ireland.

I try to stand up when it's played. Depends on whether I've just had me lunch or not

Re: National Anthem at events

despite being a royalist(i believe in the institution i dont flag wave and all that crap), i hate god save the queen, jeruselem should be the english anthem(written by an englishman about england), singing the anthem before a sporting event should be about getting the blood flowing and reminding you what you are there for, not so some tin pot noise polluter(russell 'we can tell you have no bloody training, its nothing to boast about' watson) can ponce about murdering the anthem
