Re: Sunburn

Bazza, That's sooooo bad for you man!

Protect your skin, dude!

Remember it's not heat but UV that gets you.
I've got sun tanned in mist before.

Get down the pharmacy and try getting
some aftersun that has pain relief.

Re: Sunburn

I may make been overstating it a bit Nev. I'm a bit pink, and the top of my head is a little tender, but I'm not really burnt to a crisp or anything.

And I made the daft mistake of not even thinking about it, because it wasn't that hot (being up on top of the Buxton hills). Had I realised how much sun was getting through, I would have put sun block on.

It was probably just a failed attempt to start a thread about the stock car racing really

Re: Sunburn

Sorry bazza, but a thread on stock car racing? I'm not sure you'll get many takers.

A thread on sunburn, however, has my full, undivided attention.

From many, many, many past experiences, I know that having a burned head is miserable. So far this year, knock on wood, I've managed to avoid the dreaded red-headed syndrome. I've been very careful about eliminating the part in my hair before opening up the sunroof. It's a nuisance, but it must be done. Inexplicably, I've also been lucky enough that I've managed to actually go outside for more than two-and-a-half minutes without burning. I still have no idea how I've managed that neat little trick.

Knowing that you're a fair-haired lad, and working on the assumption that you're sporting a close-shaved do, I'd suggest going out and buying yourself a natty little chapeau. Yes I know it seems a shame to have to cover yourself up in the nice, warm weather, but that woozy, dozy, heat-stroke kind of feeling you get from having an overly hot head really takes the spring out of your step.

If you ever find a way of putting sunblock on the top of your head (without turning your hair into a gooey, oil slick of a mess) please let me know. Hmm, maybe we should get together and work on an SPF 45 shampoo. There might be a pile of money to be made.

Re: Sunburn

When I told Jenny, by email, that I had a sore head on Monday morning, she replied:

"You probably should have worn your hat"

adding as a little after thought:

"I suppose it might have helped if you'd known we had it with us"

Anyway, can hardly blame her, it's not officially her job to look after me, it's just a kind of hobby

The stock car racing in question Tor is probably very different to what you understand by the term. I actually intended to go and watch banger racing, but they only had stock car meets on last weekend.
It's a low budget, short oval racing series, involving custom built vehicles (banger racing just uses whatever car you've been able to grab from a scrapyard and fit a roll cage in on the other hand). It is a full contact formula, with drivers being quite allowed to nudge each other wide on the corners to gain an advantage. Here are some pics from the day we were there:
http://www.buxtonracepix.com/07-05-2...m/07-05-20.htm

Good fun, and the F1 stocks (with Chevy V8's and very little in the way of exhaust) literally make your insides vibrate as they do past. We were standing (and the car was parked for that matter) about 2 feet away from the side of the track. I had to hose Sofia down when we got home as she was covered in rubber particles.

I haven't been since I was about 8 so was interested to see whether I still found it fun. Glad to say, I did. I will be going again, but next time will make sure there is banger racing in the offing, especially a demolition derby - basically a case of the last car able to move being the winner.

Re: Sunburn

Having found that picture, I (of course) had to pore through them trying to find one with my GTA on it

This one:
http://www.buxtonracepix.com/07-05-20/067.jpg
is the only one I've found so far. If you look at the marshal in the background, you'll see a small red smudge just to the left of him, that's Sofia! The even smaller smudges in front of her are probably me and friends!
Number 205 in the foreground is from Congleton, but didn't set the world alight. Number 357 was a woman driver, and I'm afraid to say was an absolute rolling roadblock. Her engine sounding like it was revving very low though, so not entirely her fault I think, badly set up.

That's simply too funny, Mr. Bear.

Y'a mean youze all didn't go watch NAAAAAAAASCAAR?

Actually I had a pretty good idea what you were talking about. There countless levels of what I'd call "stock car racing" around here, although I'm sure all the participants would jump in and say, "it's not stock car, it's bandit car/outlaw/mini-stocks/thundercar/whatever." Personally I'm just not interested enough to worry about the minute details.

Have you given any thought to the shampoo idea? I figure with your working background and my brilliant ideas, we'll have a sure-fire hit on our hands.

Re: Sunburn

I hadn't considered the pre-sun idea. I was thinking on sunday night of whether it was sensible to put moisturiser on the hair covered bits of my head or not. Eventually decided not to, as I generally don't like the slimey feel of moisturiser at the best of times, never mind in my hair.

Surely if they can make non-greasy hair gel though, not-greasy through-hair sun screen can't be beyond the bounds of science? Man on the moon and all that.

As an aside (and I'm gutted to have missed this) here are photos from May 7th, when the best motorsport spectacle that exists on this planet took place - Caravan racing. Jeremy Clarkson would love this:
